Energy giant ExxonMobil is leveraging Kinaxis and its scenario planning capabilities to boost supply chain resilience, agility and continuity

Kinaxis, a global leader in end-to-end supply chain orchestration, designed the Supply Chain Unplugged series to foster open dialogue and peer-to-peer learning.

The events feature keynote presentations, panel discussions, live technology demonstrations and case studies, aiming to equip supply chain professionals with practical knowledge and strategies to tackle modern challenges.

Networking opportunities allow attendees to connect with peers, partners and thought leaders, further strengthening the community of supply chain excellence across Asia.

At the Singapore event, Rozena Dendy, Global Sales and Operations Planning Manager at ExxonMobil, shared valuable insights on scenario planning as the key to building supply chain resilience.

Why is scenario planning so important for supply chain resilience?

Many people think a plan is just one fixed plan, but that’s not the case. Scenario planning involves preparing multiple plans—best case, worst case and most likely scenarios and being agile enough to deploy the right one as situations evolve. Flexibility is essential to maintain resilience no matter what challenges arise.

Can you provide a real-world example where scenario planning helped ExxonMobil?

One example is the unplanned shutdown of a major pipeline transporting gasoline and diesel from Texas to New York. When it shut down unexpectedly, our team used Kinaxis’ tools to gain full inventory visibility across terminals and the network. It allowed us to respond quickly, keep service stations supplied, avoid customer disruptions and minimise lost sales. It was a phenomenal demonstration of resilience in action.

How did Kinaxis technology support your response during the major pipeline shutdown?

Kinaxis provided us with real-time visibility and scenario modelling capabilities. We were able to see the network of supply chain data, where inventory was available and where demand was highest. It enabled us to coordinate across the network efficiently and ensure customers continued to receive gasoline, diesel and jet fuel without interruption.

What broader lessons can supply chain professionals take from this experience?

The key takeaway is that resilience requires both strategic planning and digital tools. Scenario planning prepares you and operationally for uncertainty, while technologies like Kinaxis give you the agility and visibility to execute those plans effectively. Together, they enable organisations to navigate disruptions and maintain service continuity.

How do you see the future of supply chain management evolving?

Supply chains will become increasingly complex and interconnected. Success will depend on agility, collaboration and embracing digital transformation. Organisations that invest in scenario planning and advanced orchestration platforms will be best positioned to thrive in this dynamic environment.

Any final thoughts for supply chain leaders?

Embrace scenario planning as a core capability, not just as an exercise but as a way of thinking. Combine that with technologies that provide real-time insights and flexibility. The combination is the foundation for building truly resilient supply chains that can withstand whatever challenges come next.
