GXO and BMW Group: Partners in Automotive Logistics

BMW Group has appointed GXO Logistics to oversee warehouse operations at its Swindon manufacturing facility, building on the contract logistics provider's automotive sector presence.
The partnership will see GXO managing car parts operations at the site, with objectives centred on supply chain optimisation and strengthening automotive production resilience across the UK.
The Swindon facility has functioned as a cornerstone of British manufacturing since 1955.
It produces pressed parts for MINI vehicles assembled in Oxford, alongside components destined for BMW models manufactured at international facilities.
The site spans 425,000 m² in the Stratton St Margaret area and currently employs over 500 people..
Implementing smarter processes for manufacturing
GXO plans to draw on its portfolio of experience across multiple industrial sectors to implement upgraded technology and smarter processes that could support BMW Group's requirements for innovation.
The logistics provider will concentrate on plant layout optimisation and the introduction of advanced automation to meet the increasingly complex production demands of the Oxford assembly plant.
Martin Cooper, MD, Technology and Consumer Goods at GXO UK&I, says: "We're excited to begin this new chapter with BMW Group at their facility in Swindon.
"We've seen great success applying smart logistics solutions across a range of industries and we look forward to driving efficiencies, strengthening resilience and building a future-proof platform for growth for BMW Group."
The focus on automation and process enhancement aims to address the sophisticated requirements of modern automotive manufacturing, where precision and timing remain critical to production schedules.
The Swindon plant functions as a vital hub for manufacturing key body components and sub-assemblies.
This includes hang-on parts such as doors, tailgates, fenders and bonnets for several MINI models, including the MINI convertible and the MINI Cooper 3- and 5-door hatch.
Recent investments have already enhanced the site's technical capabilities.
According to the facility's timeline, the site was founded by Pressed Steel in 1955 as an extension to the Oxford plant.
In 2022, a new press shop and logistics hall featuring an automated steel pressing facility opened.
GXO completed a £762m ($950m) takeover of the Chippenham-based Wincanton group in 2024.
The 2022 expansion into new logistics provided the necessary physical infrastructure for the latest press-shop technology.
GXO's role in managing these assets involves supervising the warehouse operations that feed these automated facilities.
Strengthening UK automotive sector capabilities
The partnership is a milestone in GXO's ongoing expansion within the UK automotive sector.
By using data-driven logistics and continuous improvement methodologies, GXO aims to ensure the Swindon site will remain agile in the face of evolving manufacturing needs.
Malcolm Wilson, former CEO of GXO, previously outlined the strategic intent behind the firm's recent acquisitions and service expansions in a company statement: "The combination of GXO and Wincanton will enhance GXO's offering for customers across the UK and Ireland and bring presence in strategic verticals that will serve as a springboard for growth."
GXO's oversight of warehouse operations is expected to strengthen the link between the Swindon pressings and the final assembly lines in Oxford, maintaining the resilience of the automotive production cycle.
