GXO Logistics, the world’s largest pure-play contract logistics provider, has announced a new transport partnership with leading fashion and homeware retailer Matalan.

As the demand for efficient, scalable supply chains grows, especially in the retail sector, Matalan has chosen GXO as a strategic partner to improve its transport and logistics operations.

Under a three-year agreement, GXO will manage over 550 deliveries per week to Matalan’s high street and retail park stores, with the aim of boosting supply chain effectiveness and ensuring seamless product availability.

GXO’s extensive expertise in supply chain management, paired with advanced technology solutions, will help Matalan optimise its logistics operations. By leveraging GXO’s vast transport network, Matalan aims to minimise operational complexities, reduce unnecessary miles and enhance delivery efficiency, all of which are critical factors in today’s fast-paced retail environment.

Richard Ball, GXO's Director of Shared Transport Networks, emphasised the role that GXO will play in supporting Matalan’s operational growth: "We’re thrilled to partner with Matalan to take over their transport services, including upstream and final-mile deliveries.

"Our goal is to provide best-in-class expertise and cutting-edge solutions, allowing Matalan to focus on what they do best - delivering quality fashion and home products to their customers."

Driving efficiency through sustainable logistics

One of the key advantages of GXO’s involvement is the implementation of eco-conscious practices in Matalan’s supply chain.

The transport fleet, which includes 55 HGVs and 110 trailers, will be operated by 100 drivers trained in GXO’s safety standards and eco-driving techniques. These practices are designed to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable supply chain model.

As the retail industry increasingly prioritises sustainability, reducing the carbon footprint of logistics operations is a significant step. This partnership allows Matalan to align its transport operations with its broader environmental goals, ensuring that deliveries are reliable and environmentally responsible.

Richard highlighted GXO’s commitment to innovation in supply chain logistics: “By using our shared transport network, we can cut down on unnecessary journeys, driving efficiency while helping reduce emissions.

"We’re already working on solutions that will streamline Matalan’s supply chain even further, contributing to both operational success and environmental sustainability.”

This focus on sustainability is becoming a cornerstone of modern logistics, where the need to balance operational efficiency with environmental responsibility has never been more important.

For Matalan, this partnership signifies a forward-thinking approach to supply chain management, ensuring that its logistics processes are equipped to meet future challenges.

Supporting Matalan’s omnichannel strategy

As a retailer that caters to both in-store and online shoppers, Matalan’s supply chain must be flexible enough to support its omnichannel approach. With more than 280 UK and international stores, combined with a robust e-commerce platform, the retailer requires a logistics network that can handle the complexities of multi-channel retailing.

"We are committed to offering our customers a hassle-free shopping experience, whether they are shopping in-store or online," adds Phil Hackney, Matalan’s Chief Supply Officer.

"To achieve this, we need a strong, efficient supply chain and GXO’s expertise will be invaluable in ensuring that our products are available where and when our customers need them."

By optimising transport processes and integrating advanced logistics technologies, GXO will play a key role in helping Matalan maintain a reliable product flow across all channels. This means better stock availability for customers, quicker replenishments in stores and a more streamlined e-commerce operation - vital in an increasingly competitive retail landscape.

The ability to pivot between different retail channels is crucial for modern retailers like Matalan. By partnering with GXO, Matalan is ensuring that its supply chain is not only efficient but also agile and capable of responding to changes in demand across physical stores and online platforms.

A partnership focused on long-term growth

GXO’s involvement in Matalan’s transport operations is about more than just managing day-to-day logistics.

The partnership is built on a shared vision of long-term growth and operational improvement. By leveraging GXO’s advanced logistics capabilities, Matalan is laying the groundwork for a supply chain that is resilient, scalable and equipped to handle future challenges.

This partnership will also enable Matalan to remain competitive in the retail sector, where efficient supply chains are a key differentiator. As customer expectations evolve, with increasing demand for quicker delivery times and greater product availability, Matalan’s strengthened supply chain will help the retailer meet these needs head-on.

Looking ahead, GXO and Matalan are expected to continue exploring new innovations in supply chain technology, from data-driven delivery optimisation to further advancements in sustainability.

As both companies look to the future, this partnership represents a significant step forward in building a supply chain that supports growth, efficiency and environmental responsibility.
