AstraZeneca has been awarded fifth place in the 2026 Global Supply Chain Top 25, primarily thanks to its “self-healing supply chain”

The 2026 Global Supply Chain Top 25 Awards by Gartner, which look at the leading supply chain networks worldwide, have recognised AstraZeneca for its efforts. Taking fifth place in the overall rankings, the global biopharmaceutical company’s growth has been enabled by its “self-healing” supply chain.

Its network uses continuous detection, scenario analysis and agentic capabilities to resolve disruption, which means human intervention is rarely required.

Autonomous workforces, which reduce the need for human intervention, were just one of the key macro trends listed by Gartner among its Top 25 listings.

AstraZeneca’s investment sets it apart

In addition to its “self-healing” supply chain, factors behind AstraZeneca’s success include access to “Thriving in the Age of AI”. This features AI upskilling seeking to embed digital skills, AI literacy and data-driven mindsets “directly into the fabric of global supply chain strategy”.

AI literacy is not the only initiative driving AstraZeneca’s supply chain success. Its network design has been noted as fundamental to achieving its “Bold Ambition” of $80 billion in total revenue by 2030.

One way the organisation has taken steps to achieve its ambitious target is its investment in new capacity, which has seen the expansion of AstraZeneca’s long-standing manufacturing footprint in Maryland.

Global supply chain leaders

The Top 25 featured a diverse range of leading supply chain companies. Comprising the other top positions was Cisco Systems in fourth and Walmart ranking third, which notably climbed 10 spots year-on-year.

The runners-up for this year’s 2026 Global Supply Chain Top 25 were NVIDIA, celebrated for its human-centred AI operations. Top spot was claimed by Schneider Electric this year, for continuing to “demonstrate how organisations can balance bold transformation ambitions with disciplined execution”.

As well as the Top 25, Gartner also recognises global giants in a “Masters” category, for which the criteria is that its supply chain must have had one of the five highest composite scores across all companies for at least seven out of the last 10 years. This year, Amazon, Apple, Procter & Gamble and Unilever all retained their Masters category status.

Future supply chain excellence

By looking at the market holistically, the Gartner survey helps to highlight common underlying trends that drove the winning operations of the Top 25 supply chains. This includes chief supply chain officers responding to global tariff dynamics, energy disruption and the effects of climate change, causing supply problems by fostering deeper ecosystem collaboration.

The collaboration has taken the form of supplier mapping, data integration and circularity. In its report, Gartner said: “Extending supply chain visibility and planning capabilities beyond enterprise boundaries enables them to capture more value from increasingly uncertain supply.”

Looking ahead, only those able to anticipate and react to this uncertainty by having the network and connections in place will be able to move goods seamlessly.

When considering the seamless movement of goods, transformation has been essential. The Global Supply Chain Awards includes the category Transformation Project of the Year. It looks to reward the initiatives that have been responsible for driving improvements in efficiency, agility and performance.

This could be achieved by using new innovations or a process redesign that helps set a new standard of supply chain excellence.

If your team has made a transformational change that has pushed your supply chain operations forward, there’s still time to enter the awards.
