TotalEnergies and STMicroelectronics have agreed to boost renewable energy in France, signalling a step towards a sustainable industrial future

TotalEnergies, a frontrunner in energy solutions globally, integrates a diverse energy mix ranging from oil and biofuels to natural gas, green gases, renewables and electricity.

The company is steadfast in its mission to deliver energy solutions that are not only more dependable and cost-effective but also sustainable for a wider audience.

Now, TotalEnergies has entered a strategic partnership with STMicroelectronics, a leader in the semiconductor sector, through a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA). This contract aims to channel renewable electricity to STMicroelectronics' operational bases across France.

The agreement specifies an impressive total volume of 1.5TWh of energy being diverted from renewable sources, principally two wind and solar farms managed by TotalEnergies.

Overall, the deal encompasses structuration services that modify fluctuating renewable outputs into a consistent supply of green electricity, covering base-load requirements.

A first for renewable agreements in France

The PPA not only represents a pioneering move in France's pursuit of long-term energy contracts but also emphasises the environmental benefits linked with these wind and solar ventures. Such projects have significant positive implications for both ecological sustainability and community welfare, a pivotal factor in sealing the deal.

Sophie Chevalier, Senior Vice President Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies

Sophie Chevalier, SVP Flexible Power & Integration at TotalEnergies, expresses her excitement: "We are delighted to sign this agreement with STMicroelectronics, which demonstrates our ability to provide long-term and innovative clean firm power solutions tailored to our customers' needs.

"TotalEnergies aims to be a preferred partner to support tech industry players towards their decarbonisation efforts and this agreement showcases our commitment and capabilities.”

Offering further insight, Geoff West, the EVP and Chief Procurement Officer at STMicroelectronics, remarks: "This first PPA in France marks yet another important step towards ST’s goal of becoming carbon neutral in its operations (Scope 1 and 2 emissions and partially Scope 3) by 2027, including the sourcing of 100% renewable energy by 2027.

“PPAs will play a major role in our transition, and we have already signed several to support ST’s operations in Italy and Malaysia. Starting in 2025, this PPA with TotalEnergies will provide a significant level of renewable energy for ST’s operations in France, which includes R&D, design, sales and marketing and large-volume chip manufacturing.”

Implications for France's energy landscape

This renewable energy deal bolsters France's national objectives to augment its renewable energy uptake, significantly advancing the nation's clean energy transformation. STMicroelectronics, a major player in semiconductor manufacturing in France, is now well positioned to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2027.

The contract also substantially lowers the company’s Scope 1 and 2 emissions, contributing to the larger cause of reducing industrial carbon emissions in France. The broad-reaching impacts of this agreement include bolstering community resilience, reducing dependency on fossil fuels, curtailing energy price unpredictability and augmenting overall energy security across the country.

Additionally, TotalEnergies further secures its leadership role in propelling France toward a sustainable energy future, aligning with national and global environmental targets.
