Optimising Healthcare Delivery: A Keynote on Supply Chain Strategy with the NHS

Speaking at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE 2023, Andrew New, CEO, of NHS Supply Chain discusses the healthcare systems optimisation of healthcare delivery.

NHS Supply Chain and the complexity of the industry

Starting his keynote by highlighting the fragmented nature of the healthcare system, New emphasises the need to focus on patient needs and maximise the value from the national healthcare system.

“Healthcare across the NHS in England is a fantastic service focused on local people and taking care of communities,” says New.

Managing £6.5 to £7bn in annual spend on medical devices, consumables, and diagnostics, New acknowledges the complexities that come with an evolving global landscape. New stresses the need for agility and flexibility in supply chains and organisational structures.

“We, as the NHS supply chain, ensure that every pound spent by the government is spent wisely for outstanding products and services across the healthcare system,” he adds.

Changing approach and organisation transformation

Realising the need for fundamental change in the NHS Supply Chain in response to the evolving world, New stresses the need to plan for different scenarios, including worst-case scenarios. He also notes the importance of making decisions that support enhanced procurement and supply chain capabilities.

“The world is a very different place now, with geopolitical instability, challenges in material supply, inflation, and no new normal,” says New. “Agility and flexibility in supply chains, commercial thinking, and organisations are fundamental for delivering exceptional patient care in this changing world."

As such New suggests the idea of simplifying processes, using data-driven decision-making, and supporting healthcare through five key objectives. Within his operations, New notes the commitment to being ‘one NHS supply chain’ with a focus on people, partnerships, and innovation.

"The decision we made years ago about tolerating risks in the supply chain has changed. The reality is that relying on past strategies is no longer effective,” says New.  "We've asked the organisation to focus on different scenarios, plan for worst cases, and ensure solutions are fit for purpose to provide assurance to the healthcare system."

Technology and innovation

Detailing the importance of technology in supporting decision-making and operations, New discusses the NHS Supply Chain’s investment in technology for internal improvement and external support of customer trusts.

New suggests that the industry must look beyond the concept of value from a cost-centric perspective, instead, they should include workforce efficiency, infrastructure capacity, and supporting operational challenges in hospitals.

"We're investing in technology not just for ourselves but to support our customers and enhance their capabilities in the trusts we work with,” says New.

Responsibility, sustainability and ESG

Highlighting the NHS’s national responsibility to drive sustainability and ESG agendas and the role that NHS Supply Chain plays in that, Bew outlines its commitment to ensuring labour standards, environmental impact, and social value are considered across the supply chain.
