Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan turns to AI planning platform o9 to boost supply chain efficiency, data use and decision-making across its operations

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan Inc (CCBJI) is doubling down on data and digital planning to fine-tune how it gets bottles into customers’ hands.

The company, which accounts for around 90% of Coca-Cola system products sold across Japan, has brought in o9 Solutions to overhaul its supply chain strategy and day-to-day operations.

The Dallas-headquartered o9, known for its enterprise AI software, is providing CCBJI with its Digital Brain platform — a tool designed to take raw data and turn it into streamlined, coordinated supply planning.

For CCBJI, the aim is to upgrade everything from demand forecasts to delivery routes while cutting waste, improving inventory accuracy and making sure shelves stay stocked across one of the world’s most demanding markets.

A data-led rethink of supply strategy

The ability to plan accurately, matching what’s needed with what’s possible, is at the core of any functioning supply chain.

For CCBJI, that means aligning production capacity, warehouse space, truck availability and shelf-life restrictions with forecasted demand across Japan. That’s no easy task, especially when the company is managing thousands of deliveries and product variations.

With o9’s Digital Brain platform in place, CCBJI plans to replace siloed systems with integrated planning tools. The platform combines demand forecasts with operational data like truck numbers and raw material supply, creating a complete view of what can be produced, when and where.

It helps teams make decisions together rather than working in isolation, which in turn avoids mismatched inventory levels or late shipments.

It also allows for what’s called “mathematical optimisation”—using algorithms to calculate the most efficient supply routes and schedules, cutting down on transport costs and warehouse delays.

As o9 puts it, the goal is "data-driven management" that uses existing assets better, supporting faster analysis and clearer decisions.

Tackling the challenges unique to the beverage industry

Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan operates in one of the most complex supply chain environments in Asia. Alongside demand volatility and geographic diversity, the company also has to manage strict expiration requirements for different customers.

o9’s technology addresses these through features like inventory allocation tracking and support for inter-site transfers.

For CCBJI, success depends on not only keeping products moving, but also doing it cost-effectively while hitting strict service-level targets.

The new system helps navigate these demands by automating routine decisions and allowing planners to focus on strategic choices — such as how much of each drink to produce or where to store fast-moving goods.
