Supply chain specialist FourKites has developed Digital Workforce, a groundbreaking solution that promises to bridge the analogue-digital divide

Supply chain operations have long been plagued by inefficiency, with teams struggling to navigate a labyrinth of disconnected systems and time-consuming manual processes.

Priya Rajagopalan, President of Product, Technology and Operations at FourKites, is clear about the current state of supply chain management: "Despite massive technology investments, supply chains are still stuck in manual coordination mode."

The statistics are stark. Teams are typically juggling five disconnected systems to make decisions, with disruption assessments taking four or more hours. This means supply chain professionals spend their days processing emails and reacting to surprises rather than driving strategic progress.

The rise of the digital workforce

FourKites has developed a groundbreaking solution that promises to bridge the analogue-digital divide: Digital Workforce.

Unlike traditional AI agents, these specialised digital colleagues deeply understand business operations and work alongside existing teams.

"These AI systems do much more than act as chatbots or automation tools," Priya explains. "They can automatically resolve challenges such as detention issues and supplier delays.

"Just as they collaborate with humans, digital workers can additionally collaborate with each other to automate more complex workflows, share information and coordinate actions as situations evolve."

Meet the digital specialists

FourKites' initial Digital Workforce introduces two key specialists:

Tracy, the track and trace expert: Tracy operates around the clock to monitor shipments, investigate exceptions and coordinate with carriers. Her capabilities extend beyond simple tracking, providing proactive management that keeps teams and customers aligned.

Sam, the supplier collaboration expert: Sam specialises in bringing suppliers online, automating document processing and shipment creation. He pursues missing information to ensure orders stay on track, reducing manual intervention.

The collaboration between these digital workers demonstrates their transformative potential.

Priya describes a scenario where Sam identifies a critical order at risk due to missing shipping details. He immediately contacts the supplier, obtains the necessary information and creates shipments. Tracy then takes over, confirming pickup appointments and managing delivery windows.

Offering unique advantages

Digital Workers represent a fundamental shift in supply chain operations, combining human-like capabilities with unique digital advantages:

  • Processing massive amounts of unstructured data simultaneously
  • Scaling instantly during volume spikes
  • Maintaining 24/7 operations
  • Permanently storing context and institutional knowledge

Shwetha Balagali, Senior Manager of Logistics North America at Unilever, is among those to have already witnessed the benefits.

“Co-innovating and implementing the digital worker Tracy has helped Unilever teams in the US make our supply chain management more efficient," she says. "Within four weeks, we observed notable improvements to exception management and tracking quality.”

Organisations like Unilever are already seeing significant benefits, with teams saving two to three hours per person daily on track and trace coordination.

    Preparing for digital transformation

Priya offers four key steps for organisations looking to embrace this technological revolution:

    1. Identify high-volume, routine or manual tasks consuming team time
    2. Map current communication channels between teams, carriers and suppliers
    3. Establish clear escalation paths for exceptions requiring human judgment
    4. Prepare teams for an evolved role focusing on strategic decisions

The days of manual coordination appear to be numbered. FourKites is expanding its Digital Workforce to include specialists in appointment management, detention and demurrage management and other critical processes.

"By taking these preparatory steps now," Priya concludes, "organisations can position themselves to fully capture the benefits of an augmented workforce where digital and human capabilities combine to achieve industry-leading performance."

The digital revolution in supply chain management has begun and promises to transform how businesses operate, bringing unprecedented efficiency, insight and strategic capability.
