Giesecke+Devrient (G+D) unveils its IoT Smart Label, integrating tracking, monitoring and automated payments to revolutionise global procurement processes

Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), the German security technology firm, has introduced an Internet of Things (IoT) Smart Label designed to transform procurement and supply chain operations.

The credit card-sized device simplifies the procure-to-pay (P2P) cycle by integrating with B2B payment systems, enabling automatic payment settlements upon delivery.

By eliminating delays and manual interventions in payment approvals, the Smart Label reshapes procurement efficiency.

The innovation specifically targets cross-border trade, where traditional payment methods like letters of credit are often cumbersome. With an annual turnover of €3bn (US$3.09bn), G+D collaborated with IoT hardware specialist Sensos to develop the label, which offers advanced features like GPS tracking, temperature monitoring and tamper detection.

These capabilities provide real-time visibility into shipments, making it especially beneficial for sectors reliant on precise environmental conditions, such as pharmaceuticals and perishable goods.

The inclusion of an integrated SIM (iSIM) eliminates the need for physical SIM cards, connecting the label directly to mobile networks. Additionally, it complies with stringent air travel certifications, ensuring uninterrupted tracking across land, sea and air logistics.

The Smart Label

Optimising supply chain transparency

The Smart Label introduces a high level of transparency and reliability into supply chains.

Its real-time tracking ensures procurement teams know the exact location and condition of goods during transit. Motion sensors and GPS technology enhance visibility, while tamper detection features provide immediate proof of delivery, streamlining receipt and acceptance processes.

These innovations align with trends in procurement automation that seek to enhance efficiency while maintaining compliance. With automated delivery proof and faster payment processes, suppliers experience improved cash flow, while buyers benefit from optimised payment cycles.

The Smart Label also supports critical logistics operations as it monitors storage conditions, ensuring regulatory compliance for temperature-sensitive shipments, and integrates seamlessly with B2B systems to trigger automatic payments upon delivery confirmation.

This holistic approach to tracking and payment helps reduce settlement delays and mitigates risks associated with traditional trade finance instruments.

According to Sharath Muddaiah, Head of Portfolio Strategy for IoT Solutions at G+D, the Smart Label builds on the company’s established track record in logistics innovation: “G+D has been dedicated to designing robust solutions for the transport and logistics market and is the market leader of solar-powered trackers with over 180,000 connected devices in the field.”

Expanding market reach and future impact

The G+D Smart Label is available for purchase through G+D’s IoT shop and direct sales channels in Germany and the United States.

It will also feature at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, where it is expected to attract interest from procurement and logistics professionals seeking advanced solutions.

This second-generation label represents G+D’s commitment to advancing digital security and payment technologies.

Since its establishment in 1852, the Munich-based company has consistently pioneered innovations, employing 14,000 staff across 123 subsidiaries worldwide. Its product offerings span financial platforms, digital security and currency technology, demonstrating its expertise in addressing industry challenges.

The Smart Label exemplifies G+D’s efforts to provide comprehensive, end-to-end solutions.

“The G+D Smart Label provides a single end-to-end solution, including dedicated service support and warranty from one source. Our industry has seen many a solution that, once sold, has limited support and we are here to set a new trend!” adds Sharath.

By combining advanced tracking with integrated payment systems, the G+D Smart Label promises to redefine supply chain management, offering a glimpse into the future of procurement and trade finance.
