Novo Nordisk's bold plan to make its supply chain nature-positive by 2045 sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the pharmaceutical industry

Novo Nordisk has unveiled an ambitious plan to become nature-positive by 2045 and halt nature loss in its value chain by 2033, reflecting a growing recognition that preserving nature is essential for business resilience.

According to the WWF, nature contributes an estimated US$1.25tn annually, highlighting the need for proactive environmental strategies across industries.

Circular for Zero: A holistic sustainability strategy

Novo Nordisk's commitment to sustainability is embedded in its 'Circular for Zero' initiative, which integrates multiple environmental goals.

Cath Tayleur, Associate Director of Nature and Biodiversity at Novo Nordisk, in a recent Linkedin post highlights the interconnected approach: "This work complements our overarching Circular for Zero strategy and was developed alongside and in collaboration with our net zero and plastic targets."

By addressing sustainability through a circular economy lens, Novo Nordisk reinforces its dedication to minimising environmental harm at every stage of its operations.

Sustainable agriculture: A focus on regenerative farming

One of Novo Nordisk's most significant environmental impacts stems from its glucose production, a key ingredient in diabetes care products.

Novo Nordisk is partnering with suppliers to source wheat and maize from regenerative farms to mitigate its footprint. This method enhances soil health and reduces the carbon footprint associated with farming.

Additionally, Novo Nordisk is actively combating deforestation within its paper and cardboard supply chain, ensuring compliance with the stringent EU Deforestation Regulation. The initiatives highlight its proactive stance on sustainable land use.

Water stewardship in high-risk areas

Water conservation is a key component of Novo Nordisk's sustainability roadmap, with the company identifying six priority sites in regions experiencing high water stress.

To address these challenges, Novo Nordisk plans to:

  • Implement water-saving programmes at high-risk sites
  • Work with suppliers to tackle water quantity and pollution issues across its upstream supply chain
  • Set a revised water savings target by 2028

By prioritising water stewardship, Novo Nordisk ensures its operations remain sustainable while mitigating risks associated with freshwater scarcity.

Biodiversity protection and restoration efforts

Novo Nordisk's sustainability efforts extend to biodiversity conservation. The company has identified seven priority sites near ecologically significant areas to make them biodiversity-positive.

Future expansion projects will incorporate biodiversity protection measures to minimise their environmental footprint.

A particularly innovative aspect of Novo Nordisk's biodiversity strategy involves shifting away from horseshoe crab blood in drug sterility testing. The crabs play a crucial role in the ecosystem and their conservation is a growing concern.

Novo Nordisk has already phased out the endangered Tachypleus species and is working towards eliminating Limulus polyphemus, pending regulatory approval of alternative testing methods.

Leading the pharmaceutical industry towards sustainability

Novo Nordisk's comprehensive approach to sustainability sets a new benchmark for supply chain management in the pharmaceutical industry. Focusing on sustainable agriculture, water conservation and biodiversity protection demonstrates that business growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

As Novo Nordisk progresses towards its 2045 nature-positive goal, its pioneering efforts will likely influence industry-wide change, inspiring other pharmaceutical companies to adopt similar environmental commitments.

The proactive strategy demonstrates its vision of a future where sustainability and innovation drive long-term success.
