A free carbon calculator empowers SMEs to measure Scope 3 emissions
A free carbon calculator empowers SMEs to measure Scope 3 emissions, tackle supply chain hotspots and access tools for effective decarbonisation

A new carbon measurement tool helps small businesses track emissions, target supply chain reductions and access free support on their journey to net zero.

The SME Climate Hub has unveiled its latest addition to a growing set of tools for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs): the Small Business Carbon Calculator.

Built in partnership with sustainability consultancy Equipoise and emissions platform Emitwise, this free, straightforward tool is designed to help businesses with up to 50 employees and a single operational site begin tracking their greenhouse gas emissions.

The calculator is part of a wider plan to make emissions measurement more accessible and accurate for smaller companies, particularly those with stretched resources. It covers emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3.

These are internationally recognised categories used to account for greenhouse gas emissions: Scope 1 includes direct emissions from owned sources, Scope 2 covers indirect emissions from purchased electricity and Scope 3 tracks all other indirect emissions, including those from supply chains.

The team behind the SME Climate Hub says removing cost as a barrier allows SMEs to focus on reducing their emissions based on real data, not assumptions.

Building tools for complex supply chains

This launch is more than just another calculator. For SMEs with links to global supply chains, it represents a shift in how carbon data can inform procurement and strategy. Emitwise’s involvement brings enterprise-grade emissions tracking into reach for smaller players.

Emitwise is a carbon accounting platform used by procurement teams dealing with supply chain complexity. Its platform draws on primary emissions data – that is, data provided directly by suppliers or from measured activity – to help businesses make informed decisions about reducing Scope 3 emissions. This category is often the most challenging, as it includes everything from raw materials to transport and distribution.

According to Ian Hind, Head of Partnerships at Emitwise: "Providing SMEs with accessible tools to measure and reduce their emissions is critical to driving real supply chain decarbonisation.

"Through our partnership with the SME Climate Hub, we’re enabling small businesses to take control of their carbon impact. The expansion of the Hub’s free suite of tools ensures even more SMEs can start decarbonising, helping to accelerate meaningful climate action across supply chains."

This matters because SMEs contribute around 40% of global business-related emissions and account for half of global GDP. While large corporations often have dedicated sustainability teams, SMEs tend to lack in-house resources. Giving them access to free, high-quality tools opens the door to better data, more transparency and ultimately, lower emissions across industries.

Practical support for first-time users

The Small Business Carbon Calculator is aimed squarely at SMEs starting from scratch. Its design strips out jargon, focuses on ease of use and prioritises clear output. The intention is to identify where emissions are highest – often called 'hotspots' – so that businesses can act where it counts most.

Luke Abbott, Co-Founder and CEO of Equipoise, explains the approach: "By powering the SME Climate Hub’s Small Business Carbon Calculator, we’re providing SMEs who are embarking on their journey a comprehensive and easy to use tool to measure emissions, identify hotspots, meet customer and regulatory reporting requirements and focus on implementing emission reduction initiatives."

Equipoise, which supports clients across the value chain, brings experience from both consultancy and practical implementation. The aim is not just to generate a number, but to give users a realistic way to act on it.

Pamela Jouven, Director of the SME Climate Hub, also highlights the broader context: "With the launch of the Small Business Carbon Calculator, the SME Climate Hub now offers free carbon measurement tools to meet the diverse needs of SMEs of all sizes and at every stage of their sustainability journey.

"Accurate emissions data is the foundation for effective climate action, and empowering small businesses to measure and reduce their emissions is crucial to helping them play their part in tackling climate change."

A toolkit to meet growing pressures

This new calculator is the third tool to be released by the SME Climate Hub in its expanded measurement suite.

Earlier in the year, the group introduced two other tools: the Advanced Business Carbon Calculator for SMEs with multiple sites and more complex operations and the Scope 3 Specific Calculator, which digs into supply chain emissions using procurement data.

Together, the trio creates a complete free offering that scales with a company’s needs. Whether a business is just beginning to measure carbon or working to reduce emissions across a broader network of suppliers, these tools cover the spectrum. They also help SMEs align with customer and regulatory expectations, which increasingly demand clear emissions reporting.

The SME Climate Hub is part of the We Mean Business Coalition, a non-profit alliance working with companies and governments to cut emissions in half by 2030. Through links with the UN Climate Change High Level Champion’s Race to Zero campaign and the Exponential Roadmap Initiative, the Hub connects its users with global climate efforts.

With accurate data in hand, the aim is to empower businesses, not overwhelm them.

The message is clear: measuring emissions is no longer optional, but it doesn't have to be expensive or complex.
