DP World's collaborations with Emitwise and Sedex signal a transformative step towards reducing the carbon footprint of global supply chains

DP World is laser-focused on addressing one of the most significant challenges in corporate sustainability: Scope 3 emissions.

And, in a groundbreaking move aimed at doing just that, the global logistics giant recently established strategic partnerships with Emitwise and Sedex.

These collaborations signal a transformative step towards reducing carbon footprints and enhancing sustainability across global supply chains.

The Scope 3 challenge

Scope 3 emissions, produced throughout a company's value chain and typically representing the largest share of its carbon footprint, have long been a thorn in the side of sustainability efforts.

Unlike Scope 1 and 2 emissions, which companies can directly control, Scope 3 emissions originate from various sources, including suppliers and logistics operations.

DP World's partnerships with Emitwise and Sedex have the potential to address the following Scope 3 categories:

  • Category 1 | Purchased Goods and Services
  • Category 4 | Upstream Transportation and Distribution
  • Category 9 | Downstream Transportation and Distribution
  • Category 11 | Use of Sold Products
  • Category 12 | End-of-Life Treatment of Sold Products

"DP World is deeply committed to reducing its carbon footprint and promoting sustainable practices throughout our operations and supply chain," explains Elske Messemaker-Kleijn, VP Procurement Europe at DP World.

"Our partnerships with Sedex and Emitwise enable us to track, manage and progress our supply chain sustainability goals – from fair labour standards to reducing carbon emissions – more effectively."

Data-driven decarbonisation

Emitwise specialises in providing sustainability professionals with precise data for informed decision-making on emissions reduction.

The firm is set to empower DP World's procurement and sustainability teams to manage Scope 3 decarbonisation efforts with accurate, primary emissions data.

Mauro Cozzi, Co-Founder and CEO at Emitwise

"Our partnership with DP World is a testament to the power of data-driven decision-making in achieving decarbonisation goals," says Mauro Cozzi, Co-Founder and CEO at Emitwise.

"By equipping DP World's procurement team and its suppliers with accurate emissions data, we are helping to drive meaningful action towards a low-carbon future."

Emitwise's technology allows suppliers at various stages of sustainability maturity to take concrete steps towards reducing their carbon emissions, fostering a more sustainable supply chain across DP World's global operations.

Holistic risk assessment with Sedex

Complementing Emitwise's quantitative approach, Sedex brings a holistic perspective

Its platform identifies, assesses and prioritises social and environmental risks within the supply chain, acknowledging that managing Scope 3 emissions extends beyond carbon reductions to understanding broader environmental and societal impacts.

Jon Hancock, CEO at Sedex

"We're delighted to welcome DP World as a Sedex member and support them with their supply chain sustainability goals," adds Jon Hancock, CEO at Sedex.

"Through our data platform and in-depth assessment tools, we help DP World and others to respond to regulatory, customer and wider stakeholder requirements on sustainable sourcing practices."

A collaborative approach to supply chain sustainability

DP World's strategic partnerships underscore its commitment to fostering a sustainable logistics ecosystem.

By providing suppliers with essential tools, data, and guidance, it is promoting a collective effort towards significant Scope 3 emission reductions.

DP World's collaborations with Emitwise and Sedex go beyond traditional sustainability efforts, focusing on creating a transparent, data-driven strategy that empowers all levels of the supply chain to engage in decarbonisation.

This approach has the potential to address multiple Scope 3 categories, including purchased goods and services, upstream and downstream transportation and distribution, use of sold products, and end-of-life treatment of sold products.

As the logistics industry grapples with increasing pressure to reduce its environmental impact, DP World's initiative sets a new standard for supply chain sustainability. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and comprehensive risk assessment tools, the company is not only addressing its own carbon footprint but also catalysing change throughout its extensive network of suppliers and partners.
