DP World Solutions Extend to Innovative Golf Ball Retrieval
DP World, renowned for its cutting-edge logistics solutions, is turning heads with its imaginative approach to an age-old sports conundrum – reclaiming those elusive lost golf balls.
Over a span of three years, this innovative scheme has successfully gathered more than 350,000 golf balls, showcasing a variety of unusual yet effective retrieval methods.
A standout technique employed by DP World involves the ancient art of falconry, which was prominently featured during the DP World Tour Championship held at the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates, UAE.
This method not only added a majestic flair to the event, but ties deeply with the local heritage of the UAE, symbolising strength and the profound connection between humans and nature.
'Smart logistics to a tee'
DP World has labelled its unique integration of falconry into sports logistics as "smart logistics to a tee".
The company hails this as a testament to its precision and commitment, mirrored by the meticulous control falconers hold over their birds, reflecting DP World’s global trade leadership.
During the recent championship event, James Oertel from the Desert Kings Falconry Club, alongside his trained birds Malika the falcon and Habib the hawk, played pivotal roles in scouting for stray golf balls, much to the delight and amazement of attendees.
This initiative showcases how traditional practices can be seamlessly woven into modern business operations to enhance both efficiency and cultural reflection.
The Second Life Container initiative
All these innovative efforts stem from DP World's Second Life Container initiative.
Launched three years ago, the initiative has already resulted in a substantial collection of golf balls, aiding in the promotion and growth of golf on a global scale.
By touring different events under the banner of the DP World Tour, this repurposed 20-foot shipping container allows spectators to donate used or unwanted golf balls, which are then redistributed to support developing golf communities worldwide.
At launch, DP World articulated its vision for the Second Life Container initiative, expressing a commitment to supporting grassroots sports while highlighting the intersection of popular sports like golf with complex supply chain dynamics exacerbated by recent global challenges.
Equipped with real-time tracking technology, the container not only holds up to 200,000 golf balls but also acts as a live demonstration of DP World’s logistical prowess as it moves seamlessly across continents via rail, road or sea.
An 'unwavering commitment' to sustainability
DP World continues to establish itself as a pioneer in sustainable business practices within the logistics and supply chain sectors.
Its newly-published Sustainability Report 2023 details ongoing projects aimed at decarbonising its operations and enhancing environmental wellbeing.
Statements from the group’s leadership, including Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem and Maha AlQattan, emphasise the strategic integration of sustainable practices into DP World’s core operations.
Its efforts are further bolstered by participation in prominent global initiatives, signifying a robust strategy towards achieving a sustainable future.
With the issuance of a US$1.5bn Green Sukuk, DP World has also made significant strides in integrating eco-friendly principles into its financial strategies, prompting a positive reception from the global market.
