Diageo Invests in Climate-Resistant Farming in East Africa
Diageo partners with tech firms to help East African farmers adapt to climate change, improving crop yields and strengthening its supply chain

Global drinks company Diageo, the name behind iconic brands like Johnnie Walker and Guinness, has taken a proactive approach to climate change by partnering with three technology companies to support East African farmers.

With a commitment of up to US$570,000, Diageo aims to develop and trial agricultural monitoring technologies designed to mitigate the effects of extreme weather, ensuring more resilient harvests.

Supporting farmers in a changing climate

The risks of to agriculture due to climate change that have the potential to impact the global supply chain include:

  • Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns and extreme weather events disrupt crop cycles, reduce yields and diminish quality.
  • Droughts, floods and storms can devastate crops, leading to shortages and price volatility.
  • Climate change impacts pest populations and disease spread, further threatening crops.

Diageo's partnerships focus on empowering smallholder farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa. The goal is to provide farmers with advanced tools to monitor soil and crop health, helping them adapt their practices in response to increasingly unpredictable weather patterns.

Droughts and floods have disrupted agricultural production across the region in recent years, making this initiative particularly timely. Diageo's technologies aim to reduce these risks, offering farmers a clearer understanding of soil conditions and crop health.

John Cant, Head of Diageo Sustainable Solutions (DSS), highlights the importance of the project:

"One of the key challenges for smallholder farmers in Africa is their exposure to climate change and water scarcity. We're working with partners to find new solutions to help ensure they get the best from their farms."

He adds, "This technology has the potential to increase yield and remove uncertainty for the farmers, helping them to earn more from their farms while giving Diageo the product we need to make great products."

Diageo's partners: Innovative solutions for climate resilience

Diageo's three new partners each bring unique technological solutions to support farmers in East Africa:

  1. AquaSpy: AquaSpy offers a cloud-based IoT agriculture platform that provides farmers with detailed insights into seasonal crop roots and soil conditions. The technology allows farmers to make informed decisions about planting and resource management, optimising crop growth even under challenging conditions.
  2. Clean Crop Technologies: The company has developed a proprietary seed surface treatment designed to accelerate germination and enhance crop resistance to environmental stressors like droughts and floods. Such innovations are particularly valuable for farmers in regions vulnerable to climate extremes.
  3. Smart Cloud Farming: By creating precision soil maps through advanced monitoring and scanning techniques, Smart Cloud Farming enables farmers to forecast crop yields accurately. These data-driven insights allow farmers to adjust their strategies and maximise productivity.
Trials for these new initiatives will begin in Kenya and Uganda (pictured), with operations set to expand across the continent dependent on results

Initial pilot programs will launch in Kenya and Uganda. If successful, Diageo plans to expand these technologies across its African supply chain, enhancing agricultural resilience and productivity in other regions.

Diageo's commitment to sustainability

The initiative aligns with Diageo's broader sustainability efforts, which have seen the company launch 14 pilot projects through its DSS program over the past four years. One notable success involved a partnership with EXXERGY and the Ardagh Group to develop a glass coating that allows thinner glass without compromising strength.

The innovation has reduced emissions and minimised resource consumption in the manufacturing process.

Diageo's ongoing commitment to sustainability reflects its strategy of collaborating with pioneers in various fields. The aim is to minimise the company's environmental impact and boost its profitability through innovative, eco-friendly solutions.

Sharing sustainable skills and knowledge

As climate change continues to impact agriculture, especially in vulnerable regions like Sub-Saharan Africa, Diageo's initiative showcases how global companies can play a transformative role in sustainable development.

By investing in technology that directly benefits local farmers, Diageo is safeguarding the stability of its supply chain while contributing to the resilience and prosperity of agricultural communities.

"This technology has the potential to increase yield and remove uncertainty for the farmers, helping them to earn more from their farms while giving Diageo the product we need to make great products."

Diageo's investment in climate-resistant farming technologies marks a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector in East Africa.

By collaborating with tech partners, Diageo strengthens its supply chain and supports local communities in adapting to the challenges posed by climate change.

As these innovative solutions are tested and scaled up, the initiative could serve as a model for other global corporations committed to sustainable development.
