The Denmark-based conglomerate company, Maersk, is set to allow shippers to book guaranteed container space in a fully online process, according to Supply Chain Dive.

It is anticipated that the service, called Maersk Spot, is available on all trades, with the exception of those going in and out of the US.

The new offering is hoped to simplify the process for shippers and allow more visibility to be provided while decreasing the risk of cargo rollovers and overbookings. Through Maersk Spot, it will ensure a customer’s cargo makes it onto the ship.

In a statement, Silvia Ding, the global head of ocean products at Maersk, said: “It is not uncommon to see overbookings to the tune of 30%, and often this leads to rolling of the customers’ cargoes since there is overbooking to compensate for the high downfall. This creates a lot of uncertainty for our customers.”

The company confirmed that Maersk Spot takes a 13-step offline process involving paper and communication and transforms it into a five-step online process.

In an announcement, Maersk said: “This is a mutual commitment between the customer and Maersk which ensures that the vicious cycle of overbookings is addressed.”
