Avetta: Easing the Rail Industry's Skilled Worker Gap

As a leading SaaS platform, Avetta is renowned for managing supply chain risks while enabling suppliers to meet high standards of qualification.
Its expansive network, hailed as the world's largest for supply chain risk management, is pivotal in overseeing supplier safety, sustainability, worker competency and performance metrics.
The evolution of RailWallet technology
In a significant development for the railway sector, May 2024 saw the introduction of Avetta's RailWallet, a tool designed to streamline compliance and foster growth within the industry.
Newly-announced upgrades are set to further enhance its functionality, particularly as Australia seeks to bridge the gap of 70,000 skilled workers needed in the next decade to boost its rail industry infrastructure.
Luke Boyle, Avetta's VP Operations APAC & Global Worker Support, explains: "For those undertaking projects in the rail corridor, RailWallet is a game changer for industry operators seeking to make the rail network safer and more efficient."
He goes on to describe how RailWallet not only saves time and costs for operators but also empowers workers by providing them with digital cards.
These cards detail qualifications and compliance statuses and facilitate online inductions through a mobile app.
How RailWallet transforms the rail worker experience
Typically, challenges such as expired competencies, misplaced access cards and missed training opportunities can significantly disrupt productivity among rail workers.
RailWallet addresses these issues by centralising vital information accessible via mobile phones. Rail workers can review their roles, update competencies, check compliance statuses and complete essential training and inductions hassle-free.
For industry operators, RailWallet simplifies planning and setting training schedules while allowing for tracking and reporting directly linked to a worker's digital profile.
The newest feature—an integration with the RailWallet Student Management System and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)—streamlines and automates competency uploads. This capability ensures immediate recognition of completed trainings in the RailWallet app, eliminating hours of manual documentation each week.
Shayne Kummerfeld, a board member of the TrackSAFE Foundation and National Assistant Secretary at the Australian Rail, Tram and Bus Industry Union (RTBU), highlights: "With RailWallet's advanced digital capabilities, we're not just simplifying compliance — we're fostering a safer, more connected and efficient rail industry."
These innovations support the sector's expansion by filling the skilled workforce gap and adapting to its evolving demands.
Strategic impact
At its core, RailWallet aims to reduce compliance risks and boost safety and productivity across the railway sector.
Through this transformative solution, Avetta underscores its commitment to enhancing the structural efficacy and operational safety of the rail industry.
