As the logistics sector reshapes its strategy to meet sustainability demands, XPO proves to be a leader in developing resilience and efficiency

The logistics industry is a vital one to global trade, ensuring the movement of goods remains steady.

However, the sector is historically a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and has been working in recent years to mitigate this impact.

XPO is just one of the logistics companies which has been adapting its strategy in order to drive sustainability within its supply chain, proving there is no need to sacrifice efficiency, cost savings or resilience in order to make the switch.

Driving sustainability

As global supply chains are increasingly facing climate-related disruptions and ongoing volatility, more businesses are changing their strategy in order to build sustainability and resilience from the ground up. As customer expectations begin to lean towards the eco-friendly route, it has proven a smart business decision to implement sustainable practises throughout the company.

XPO is one of the logistics companies which is helping businesses make that environmental switch, developing solutions which build resilient, efficient and sustainable supply chains.

Decarbonisation has become a main priority for businesses around the world, particularly within the logistics sector.

XPO has implemented a range of initiatives and solutions to reduce its environmental impact, including its LESS (Low Emissions Sustainable Solutions) programme, which encourages the use of alternative fuels, including Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), and the use of electric vehicles (EVs). Moreover, its capabilities for multimodal transport ensure that the most-environmentally friendly and efficient transport is being used at any given time. The integration of road, rail, sea and river shipping helps shippers reduce their carbon footprint and opens up the opportunities for alternative fuels.

Its commitment to sustainability earned its achievement of the EcoVadis Gold Medal in 2024, earning its place in the top 1% of European road transport companies.

Expanding logistics capabilities

As the logistics sector continues to reshape, the pressures to adapt are high. Regulatory complexity, cost volatility, carbon compliance and capacity concerns are all intersecting to become issues that need to be tackled in conjunction with one another.

To face these concerns and remain resilient at the same time, XPO is reshaping its supply chain and procurement strategies. The company is embedding AI into its daily operations, using its ExpressNow service to respond to logistics demands. It relies on AI-led scheduling systems with real-time data, in order to enhance end-to-end visibility.

Moreover, XPO Connect acts as an automated marketplace, providing virtual access to XPO's transportation services and using machine learning in order to continually adapt. It analyses a range of data to determine the ideal carrier for each load, using real-time market conditions to ensure customers get the optimal solution.

"In 2026, data-rich planning, AI-led decision-making and digitally connected networks will redefine how goods move," explains Simon Evans, Finance Director for the UK and Ireland, at XPO.

"Logistics becomes less about chasing growth and more about making every move count through smarter loads, more intelligent nods and smarter decisions."

Through its ongoing transformations, XPO has proven to be an expert in sustainable and efficient logistics.
