Celebrating Whitman's history

Whitman was established in 1966 and plays a significant role in the The Estée Lauder Companies' global manufacturing network. The facility has a manufacturing focus on skincare products, with iconic brands such as Clinique, La Mer and Estée Lauder being made there. It also manufactures Jo Malone London products with its fragrance capabilities.

Whitman is one of nine global manufacturing facilities belonging to The Estée Lauder Companies, and the only one in the UK. It runs using 24-hour operations, producing more than 90 million units every year. The products are then distributed across the UK, Europe and selected markets around the world.

“For sixty years, Whitman has reflected the craftsmanship, quality and innovation that have defined The Estée Lauder Companies since my grandparents founded the business,” says William P. Lauder, Chair of the Board at The Estée Lauder Companies.

“When my family established our manufacturing footprint here in 1966, we recognised the remarkable depth of British artisanal skill, and we are proud to continue investing in that legacy today.”

Company integration

This investment relates to the integration of its long-standing partner. ELC will be gaining capabilities focused on select luxury candle and home fragrances from Contract Candles. It is a long-standing partner of ELC, as well as creator of scent diffusers and luxury candles.

The integration means that ELC will assume the lease of one of Contract Candles' two UK facilities and will absorb approximately 50 employees into the workforce over time. It also reflects growth in research and development capabilities and quality capabilities.

Through the acquisition, the UK will become the primary manufacturing base for The Estée Lauder Companies’ candles portfolio. This will include AERIN, TOM FORD and Jo Malone London. The investment means that ELC will have more operational control over the production lines and, as manufacturing moves more in-house, ELC will gain long-term resilience

It is also a significant step for UK manufacturing within the company, demonstrating how ELC is prioritising British craftsmanship.

“The UK plays a significant role in our global manufacturing network, and this investment in candle and home fragrance manufacturing reflects our continued commitment to British craftsmanship and innovation," explained Roberto Canevari, Executive Vice President, Chief Value Chain Officer at The Estée Lauder Companies, during the Whitman 60th anniversary celebration.

"Bringing these activities more closely into our manufacturing network will strengthen resilience and support our ability to continue delivering the exceptional quality and artistry that define our brands."

Since 2020, ELC has invested US$72m in the Whitman facility, increasing automation, quality systems, sustainability initiatives and advanced manufacturing capabilities. It has also been partnering with local universities for STEM outreach programmes and has invested in apprenticeships.

The integration of the facilities strengthens the manufacturing ecosystem within the UK and demonstrates its commitment to high-quality and resilient processes.

It comes at a time where home fragrance is facing growing consumer interest, particularly within the Jo Malone London brand. Consumers are increasingly wanting to elevate their home environments, with iconic candles being a staple of this experience.

As a British brand and leading luxury home fragrance brand in the UK, Jo Malone London is facing greater demand. The integration of ELC and Contract Candles reflects an ongoing commitment to delivering on consumer expectations.
