Leonard Lauder, eldest son of Estée and Joseph H. Lauder, died on 14th June 2025, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy within The Estée Lauder Companies

The Estée Lauder Companies (ELC) was founded in 1946, by Estée Lauder and Joseph H. Lauder. In 1958, their oldest son, Leonard, joined the company at age 25, soon making his own mark on the family business.

During his time at the company, he transformed EstĂ©e Lauder into a global brand, elevating it into the leading beauty company it is today.

On 14 June 2025, Leonard died in his home in Manhattan, aged 92, leaving the industry to reflect on his legacy.

Throughout his career at ELC, Leonard held the positions of President (1972-1995), Chief Executive Officer (1982-1999) and Chairman (1995-2009), but remained an active Chairman Emeritus until his death.

He led the launch of many of ELC’s most notable brands throughout his time in the company.

His portfolio includes Amaris (1963), Clinique (1968) and the Lab Series (originally launched in 1986 under Amaris Lab Series, before its rebrand to Lab Series for Men in 1994).

His impact on the company's portfolio extended to bringing other brands into ELC. He was responsible for the acquisition of MAC Cosmetics (1994), Bobbi Brown (1995), Jo Malone London (1999) La Mer (1995) and Aveda (1997).

In the mid 1990s, Leonard created ELC’s first research and development laboratory, bringing in scientists and other experts to create products and packaging.

His son and Chair of the Board of Directors, ELC, William P. Lauder, says: “Throughout his life, my father worked tirelessly to build and transform the beauty industry, pioneering many of the innovations, trends and best practices that are foundational to the industry today.”

The development of an in-house laboratory allowed for a streamlined supply chain with full control over product safety and sustainability

Leonard’s impact on the company’s brands and supply chains through the introduction of the laboratory was immeasurable.

President and Chief Executive Officer StĂ©phane de La Faverie asserts: “To the industry, he was an icon and pioneer, earning respect worldwide. His energy and vision helped shape our company and will continue to do so for generations to come.”

Leonard’s leading role within the expansion of ELC transformed it into the international company it is.

He brought in professional management at every level, ensuring smooth and efficient running throughout the company.

As well as Leonard’s official positions within ELC and his business achievements, he was known for his involvement in medical research and his philanthropic ventures, many of which directly impacted his network of staff.

During his time, Leonard fostered growth within the company, advocating for his employees and recognising the work they were doing.

StĂ©phane says: “He was a deeply compassionate leader who cared profoundly about every person in the company.”

In 2020, Leonard was instrumental to the development of the ELC Cares Relief Fund to help support ELC’s employees during the pandemic – and it is still running today.

The fund was created to support the physical, mental and emotional well-being of employees and their families. It provides immediate and critical financial relief when employees most need it.

William explains: “His impact was enormous. He believed that employees were the heart and soul of our company, and they adored him and moments spent with him. His warmth and thoughtfulness made an imprint on our company, the industry, and, of course, our family.”

His generosity extended outside of ELC–following the pandemic’s awareness of a shortage of quality primary care in underserved communities, Leonard donated US$125m to the University of Pennsylvania in order to create a tuition-free programme to educate nurse practitioners.

Leonard’s passion, both for the company and the community, will remain his legacy. His impact on the success of ELC and its global growth can be seen throughout the company’s history.
