Royal Mail won Project of the Year at last year's Procurement & Supply Chain Awards
Learning from previous winners of the Project of the Year award, supply chain leaders show how modern supply chains drive efficiency and growth

Supply chains are experiencing rapid shifts on an unprecedented scale, with organisations facing complex geopolitical pressures, regulatory changes and fluctuating material costs. Those leading our sector are required to adapt their business models to increase resilience and ensure they maintain a competitive advantage.

To recognise those achieving this level of excellence, the upcoming Global Supply Chain Awards 2026 includes a Transformation Project of the Year Award, which honours companies that have successfully redesigned their supply chain operations to achieve measurable improvements in efficiency.

We take a look back at the recipients of this highly coveted award from last year, where winners demonstrated true operational transformation, which included a combination of advanced technology, cultural change and clear strategic alignment.

Continuous operational improvement

Taking the title of Project of the Year at the awards last year was Royal Mail, following the execution of its comprehensive modernisation programme across its network using Wiliot's battery-free ambient IoT technology. The organisation attached digital tags to 850,000 rolling containers, allowing it to track assets without manual scanning.

We are investing to enhance that proposition further and… remain focused on delivering convenience, reliability and sustainable long-term growth across our networks.

Martin Seidenberg, Group Chief Executive Officer at IDS

Looking at the most recent 12 months, in its financial results for year-end March 2026, the International Distribution Service (IDS), which is the company that owns and operates the postal and logistics businesses Royal Mail and GLS, said that continued investment in out-of-home, automation and AI innovation means the Group is well-placed to support the consumer shift towards the convenience of lockers and shops.

“The continued growth of marketplaces and e-commerce is increasing demand for convenient, flexible delivery and returns solutions across Europe,” says Martin Seidenberg, Group Chief Executive Officer at IDS.

“Our unique multi-channel offering — spanning home delivery, lockers, shops and parcel postboxes — positions the business strongly to meet evolving customer needs. We are investing to enhance that proposition further and, with EP Group’s backing and the commitment of our people, we remain focused on delivering convenience, reliability and sustainable long-term growth across our networks.”

Mentioning some projects specifically, the IDS said that it was delivering infrastructure projects in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hungary and Spain to support growth, while also leveraging technology and AI to increase operational efficiency and make deliveries faster and more reliable.

It said its new driver app with precise last-metre locations for pick-up and drop-off is “improving driver productivity by up to 15 minutes per route”.

In other recent releases, Royal Mail announced it has achieved a 31% reduction in emissions due to fleet transformation and energy efficiency, showing a continued dedication towards supply chain improvements.

Supply chain expansion

Management consultancy Argon & Co x Moderna also earned highly commended recognition in 2025 for its collaborative approach to logistics redesign.

Since its recognition, Argon & Co has announced a global partnership with QAD | Redzone, bringing together transformation-led consulting and market-leading connected workforce technology to help manufacturers improve frontline execution and productivity across factory operations. Earlier this year, it also expanded its presence in the US after joining with North American consulting firm Scott Sheldon LLC.

Moderna meanwhile has invested $140m into expanding its Norwood, Massachusetts facility, as part of a project that aims to complete its end-to-end domestic mRNA production capabilities by 2027.

Maturing functions through collaboration

Another highly commended entry to last year’s awards was a collaboration between Vertice and ClearScore, which successfully integrated software-as-a-service spend analytics directly into daily financial workflows.

Speaking at the time, Ed Mothershaw, Head of Data Engineering at ClearScore, said: “By partnering with Vertice, ClearScore has substantially matured our procurement function.

“We now benefit from improved visibility, superior contract negotiation and simplified workflows. If you have a large SaaS stack, I’d be surprised if Vertice couldn’t find effective savings.”

Looking at the past year, Vertice has acquired software pricing specialist Vendr, which it sees as a move to expand its procurement intelligence capabilities and strengthen its position in AI-powered procurement.

Preparing for future challenges

AI expansion is a likely common theme among this year’s entrants, with the evolution of supply chain technology meaning that organisations are already exploring how predictive algorithms are able to anticipate disruption before it impacts revenue.

Those looking to emulate the success of Royal Mail and other leading organisations detailed above need to document their journey with clear, data-driven evidence. Demonstrating a clear return on investment is essential for standing out in a highly competitive field.

This year’s ceremony will once again bring together the most innovative firms all in one room to celebrate the projects pushing forward global supply chain networks.
