Supply Chain Concerns Hike Prices for Nintendo Switch 2

Memory chip procurement has become a constraint for gaming console manufacturers. Nintendo and Sony have both adjusted hardware pricing in response to component cost pressures and supply conditions.
Nintendo announced price changes for its Switch 2 console. The US price will move from US$449.99 to US$499.99 and European markets will see the price adjust from €469.99 to €499.99. These changes take effect in September 2026.
"This is in response to various changes in market conditions, which are expected to extend over the medium-to-long term," Nintendo says.
"We understand that pricing changes can be challenging for customers and deeply appreciate the continued enthusiasm of our fans for Nintendo products and experiences."
Sony implemented a US$100 price increase for PlayStation hardware in March.
Memory component pricing trends
Memory chip costs doubled during the first quarter of 2026. Forecasts suggest a further 63% increase in the current quarter, attributed to data centre demand.
Capacity expansion efforts are underway among producers and new fabrication facilities require extended lead times before production begins. Tight supply conditions could persist until new lines reach operational status.
Consumer electronics manufacturers face allocation challenges. Smartphones, laptops and gaming hardware all compete for the same memory components. Gaming console economics have shifted as a result of these procurement constraints.
Nintendo adjusts to input costs
Shuntaro Furukawa, President at Nintendo, cited component costs and currency exchange rates as factors in the pricing adjustment. During an earnings call, Shuntaro indicated that profitability could remain similar to the previous financial year despite the price changes.
The company has not disclosed specific memory procurement volumes or contract terms. Supply chain visibility remains limited for the console manufacturer as it navigates component availability.
Currency fluctuations add another variable to hardware margins. Exchange rate movements affect both procurement costs and regional pricing strategies.
Sony secures memory allocation
Sony announced price increases for PlayStation 5 consoles and PlayStation Portal. Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment, addressed the adjustment in a PlayStation blog post.
"With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we've made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal remote player globally," Isabelle says.
"We know that price changes impact our community and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide."
Sony has locked memory supply contracts for the current financial year. Hiroki Totoki, Chief Executive Officer at Sony, stated during an earnings briefing that elevated pricing could extend into the following year. Hiroki mentioned the company is examining cost reduction opportunities in non-memory areas.
Hardware sales volumes depend on memory procurement at viable price points, according to Hiroki. Profitability is expected to align with the previous year's performance.
Console pricing historically declined as products aged through their lifecycle. The current trend represents a departure from that pattern, with hardware costs increasing rather than decreasing over time.
