Faster, Greener, Smarter: Spring GDS’s AI Takeover

Spring GDS, the international logistics and cross-border ecommerce specialist, has confirmed a six-figure investment in AI across its European operations.
The move combines technology upgrades, training and live projects, aimed squarely at making supply chains faster, greener and more reliable.
The company operates 18 centres across three continents and works with more than 230 international logistics partners. That reach gives ecommerce merchants access to 190 global destinations.
Its sustainability work includes the adoption of HVO100 fuel for European road operations, backing its commitment to net zero emissions by 2040.
A subsidiary of PostNL, Spring GDS says its focus is on improving efficiency, enhancing the customer experience and keeping pace with rapid changes in the logistics sector, including within the UK.
Smart supply chain optimisation
Spring GDS is rolling out AI applications designed to automate complex workflows and enable real-time decision-making. These systems target several pressure points in logistics, including delivery route planning, demand forecasting and parcel tracking.
For routing and delivery, AI models analyse live traffic, weather conditions and scheduled deliveries to determine the most efficient path. This approach delivers an average 10% reduction in mileage, with a matching cut in CO2 emissions. These gains directly support the company’s net zero target and reduce costs for customers.
In demand planning, machine learning tools forecast customer needs to help retailers and small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) balance inventory and resources. This reduces the risk of stock shortages or delays, especially during seasonal peaks.
Automated sorting and tracking systems further streamline the flow of parcels through hubs. These AI-powered systems offer accurate, real-time updates for customers, reducing uncertainty and improving delivery reliability.
In customer service, AI tools such as chatbots, virtual assistants and automated agents help answer routine enquiries. The company reports a 30-40% boost in service efficiency while keeping human interaction at the core. The aim is to free up staff for more complex issues without compromising on personal service.
Building capacity and talent
This investment in technology comes after major physical expansion in the UK.
Earlier this year, Spring GDS UK opened a new hub at London Heathrow and tripled daily processing capacity at its Haydock site near Manchester to 25,000 items a day.
The growth is matched by a recruitment and upskilling drive. Spring GDS is actively hiring in the UK, including for technical roles, and is seeking grassroots talent. This effort runs counter to Manpower data showing that 76% of UK employers in transport, logistics and automotive face skills shortages.
The company sees the combination of advanced technology and skilled staff as the route to maintaining a competitive edge in global ecommerce. This is in line with a Capgemini Research finding that 59% of British respondents plan to upgrade or expand manufacturing in the UK and Europe by 2028, a trend known as reshoring.
UK as a hub for cross-border ecommerce
Kelly van der Weg, Managing Director of Spring Global Delivery Solutions UK, believes the UK’s role in international ecommerce will only grow.
He says: "In these unusual times, the UK has the potential to become a still more important hub for international e-commerce providers seeking routes into Europe and the USA.
"We’ve demonstrated our commitment to the UK with new hires and expanded facilities this year.
"However, our commitment to AI-driven innovation shows we’re gearing up to deliver faster, more reliable and sustainable services for the SMBs, e-commerce providers and retailers who rely on us.
We believe that in these times, creative problem solvers will find new solutions and ways to grow and thrive."
By blending AI-powered supply chain optimisation with expanded physical infrastructure and a strong talent pipeline, Spring GDS is positioning itself as a logistics provider capable of meeting rising customer expectations while advancing sustainability goals.
