Individuals Driving Supply Chain Excellence: Success Stories

It is not merely organisations as a whole that push forward supply chain innovation, but behind every companyâs success are the individuals who make it happen.
In addition to exceptional commitment, leadership and problem-solving skills, the heroes of our profession, whose actions make a significant positive difference to the success of their respective organisations, should not be overlooked.
If you know a worthy recipient whose dedication to supply chain excellence is unmatched, there is still time to put them forward, with the deadline of 11:55 BST, 9 July.
A lifetime of supply chain innovation
A career in supply chain management is not an easy path, especially when we look back at the many factors industry leaders have been faced with this year. From maritime chokeholds to global geopolitical instability and tariffs, those at the top of the chain have had to display resilience at scale.
The award motivated me to try again, but at a different level: not just to improve procurement performance, but to challenge how the market thinks about technology, operating models and future procurement talent.
Last yearâs recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award was Dirk Karl, former Group Executive and Chief Procurement Officer at MTN Group. He received the honour thanks to his work introducing digital innovation, such as AI-driven platforms like Px360, which helped to provide greater transparency and supplier performance.
Before MTN, Dirkâs career expanded to extensive experience in global sourcing, previously working with multinational corporations developing skills in supplier negotiations, cost optimisation and risk management.
Since October 2025, he has been putting his supply chain expertise into practice at Humain (Saudi Arabia, Riyadh), an artificial intelligence and technology company.
When asked about what his win meant to him and his work in the past year, Dirk told Supply Chain Digital:
âWinning the Lifetime Achievement Award was deeply meaningful to me, but it did not feel like an ending. It actually challenged me to ask what the next chapter of impact could look like.
"Since then, I have moved country, stepped out of my comfort zone again and joined the mission of helping build one of the largest AI companies with regional and international ambition. My focus has been on creating an agile, AI-native procurement organisation and developing an agentic AI procure-to-pay platform built by my own team, without relying on traditional consultancies or off-the-shelf software packages.
"The award motivated me to try again, but at a different level: not just to improve procurement performance, but to challenge how the market thinks about technology, operating models and future procurement talent. This journey is my attempt to leave a legacy by proving that procurement can build, innovate and commercialise AI-native solutions from within."
Championing supply chain collaboration
As well as taking the accolade of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Dirk was also highly commended in the Executive of the Year category, showing a significant contribution to our industry.
The winner of this award however was Nita Nair, formerly a senior executive at Emirates NBD. Her career spans digital banking, strategy and transformation, and during her time at Emirates, Nita supported the global banking group with its shift towards customer-centric innovation.
Celebrated for her industry-wide initiatives, Nita was noted by the judges for championing collaboration, innovation and inclusion across procurement. She achieved this with global forums, think tanks and mentorship, which influenced policy and advanced ESG practices.
As with Dirk, Nita has also joined Humain (Saudi Arabia, Riyadh) in the past year, where she says on her LinkedIn, that she is âhelping shape the future of enterprise operations through AI-native solutions and agentic AI, combining operational excellence with intelligent technologies to drive innovation, productivity and sustainable growthâ.
Sharing expertise
Another supply chain hero highly commended in the Executive of the Year category at last yearâs awards was James Gellert, Executive Chair of RapidRatings. The financial health data and analytics company launched RiskPulse Powered by Creditsafe at the start of this year, which monitors 400 million suppliers in real-time.
When asked about what his recognition in this category meant to him, James told Supply Chain Digital: "It was an honour to be recognised in the Supply Chain Hero category, particularly by an organisation that brings together leaders from across the global supply chain community.
"The recognition reflects the work of the entire team at RapidRatings, whose commitment to strengthening supplier relationships and building more resilient supply chains makes achievements like this possible."
Looking ahead, James said its exciting that our industry continues to champion innovation.
"Over the past year, the supply chain landscape has continued to evolve rapidly, with new technologies and changing market dynamics reshaping how organisations manage risk and performance," says James.
"We've kept a pulse on the needs of our customers and the broader industry and have evolved our solutions to help organisations gain greater risk visibility, strengthen supplier partnerships, and build resilience across their supply chains. It's been rewarding to contribute to that progress and to see the industry continue embracing innovation and collaboration."
On a personal note, James continues to lean on his wealth of experience to speak as part of panels covering a wide variety of supply chain topics, from working capital efficiency gained from better supplier financial intelligence to supplier risk and tariffâaware supply tier strategies.
If youâd like to hear more industry-leading expertise from James, he, along with Tom Derry, former CEO of ISM, will be hosting an exclusive webinar to explore ways to manage supply chain risk, strengthen resilience and navigate tariff and geopolitical disruption.
