Having joined the company 18 months ago, he describes his position as "super dynamic and interesting," overseeing operations that span from product strategy to ensuring customer success through professional services and support teams.

Asked about the impact of recent trade disruptions and tariff changes, Dean emphasises that, while uncertainty has become commonplace, Coupa was well-prepared.

"The reality is we've been through many, many times of uncertainty," he reflects. "We're kind of used to it. We've learned that it is the new norm.

"At Coupa, we've been modelling and solving for tariff implications for tax and duty implications for over 10 years now."

This foresight enabled the company to respond swiftly to customer needs, providing immediate capabilities and insights to help businesses understand tariff implications for their operations.

The company has gone beyond simply offering existing solutions, taking steps to streamline processes and create tools that assist less sophisticated customers or partners who haven't yet adopted their technology. It's an approach that demonstrates Coupa's commitment to accessibility across different levels of technological adoption.

Digital twins for supply chain optimisation

At the heart of Coupa's supply chain design and planning business lies the creation of digital twins – comprehensive digital models of entire supply chain networks.

Dean describes this as mapping together "all of their suppliers, their distribution, their operations, their customers" to help companies leverage data and solve real-world complexities.

This cloud-native application, developed over nearly two decades, delivers dynamic results for more than 300 customers globally.

Dean explains Coupa's broader mission clearly: "We're on a mission to obviously connect buyers and suppliers. That is our goal."

The platform's foundational capabilities focus on enabling transparent transactions and collaboration at scale to drive efficiencies and mitigate volatility risks.

AI revolution: Introducing Navi

Perhaps the most significant development highlighted by Dean is the launch of Navi, Coupa's generative AI agent integrated across the entire platform. This innovation represents what he calls a "modernising and revolutionising" approach to technology interaction, streamlining daily tasks through automation.

What sets Navi apart is its unique combination of generative AI with mathematical optimisation.

Dean explains: "Generative AI isn't particularly good with math and our foundation is built on mathematical optimisation.

"We've taken generative AI and combined it with our mathematical optimisation to provide agents that don't just answer routine questions, but can actually build models, compare models and scenarios and produce outputs and produce guidance," Dean elaborates.

The power of peer learning

Dean emphasises the importance of bringing together industry peers under one roof at events like Coupa Inspire: "It's two, three days of action-packed learning, networking and knowledge."

He goes on to accentuate the value of a peer-to-peer learning environment: "This is truly a very concentrated group of peers. They've seen challenges like you're seeing, they've solved challenges that you're trying to solve."

This focus on shared experience is reinforced by the event's structure, with approximately 70% of breakout sessions being customer-led: "You're not hearing from us. We're not here to provide a marketing pitch. We're here for you to learn."

As businesses continue to face unprecedented supply chain challenges, Coupa's combination of established expertise, innovative AI integration and commitment to customer success positions the company at the forefront of supply chain transformation. With leaders like Dean driving this vision forward, the future of supply chain management looks increasingly intelligent and resilient.
