CMA CGM Acquires Freightliner UK to Expand UK Logistics

In a move to strengthen intermodal services in Europe, CMA CGM has aquired UK-based Freightliner UK Intermodal Logistics.
Although Freightliner will remain a standalone operator, it will greatly benefit from CMA CGM's global logistics and shipping dominance.
The merger will help both companies in their decarbonisation journeys.
The merger
The CMA CGM Group is a global player in sea, air, land and logistics solutions, aiming to contribute to sustainable globalisation through socially and economically responsible international trade.
The company provides end-to-end transport solutions for a range of goods, utilising shipping, land and airfreight services as well as a network of warehouses.
Through this network, it can deliver an intermodal approach to provide absolute efficiency for its customers' needs.
Part of CMA CGM's mission is to create an inclusive globalisation which operates on a sustainable platform, implementing tangible actions which are planet- and people-friendly.
The CMA CGM Group already has a strong UK presence, with approximately 7,200 employees across its maritime, logistics and inland services.
The Group's shipping agency operates 28 services connecting the UK with the rest of the world, carrying 802,000 TEUs to and from the UK in 2024.
Through its subsidiary CCIS, the Group transported 200,0000 TEUs by rail and road between January and July 2025.
As part of its move to build a sustainable and competitive transport system in Europe, it has acquired Freightliner UK, encompassing the Freightliner brand, rail and road operations and inland terminals.
Freightliner UK began in 1965, when it ran its first train from London to Scotland.
Since then, it has grown in presence, establishing operations across Europe.
Sustainable motivation
Through adding an established UK name to the CMA Group, it further establishes its commitment to shifting from road to rail.
In doing this, it is focusing on decarbonising its global supply chains. CMA CGM already works hard to be more sustainable, including its use of liquefied natural gas, biomethane and biofuel.
With its dedication to using the most responsible solutions, it is significantly reducing the environmental impact of maritime transport and logistics, with an aim of reaching carbon neutrality by 2050.
Rodolphe SaadĂ©, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the CMA CGM Group, says: âThe acquisition of Freightliner, a leading rail freight operator, strengthens our intermodal presence in the United Kingdom, a strategic market for CMA CGM.
"It enables us to connect sea, rail and road more efficiently, delivering better solutions for our customers. It is also a concrete step in expanding lower-carbon transport options, supporting both their needs and the decarbonisation of global trade.â
Rail freight significantly reduces COâ in comparison to road transport, as it removes thousands of lorries from the road every day.
The merger will blend Freightliner UK's expertise of UK rail operations with CMA CGM's intermodal solutions in order to satisfy its European customers and ensure seamless transportation.
Expanding supply chains
The merger is expected to reach completion in early 2026, paving the way for the development of comprehensive intermodal offerings combining maritime, rail and road.
Through the merger, there will be better connectivity between the UK and Europe's major ports due strategically placed inland terminals.
As a result of both companies' decarbonised logistics solutions, the merger is sure to enhance sustainability in UK-based freight.
The merger allows CMA to take on the Freightliner brand, but other Freightliner businesses - Heavy Haul, Rotterdam Rail Feeding, and Freightliner Poland/Germany - are not part of the deal.
Moreover, the company will be run independently with existing teams, rather than under the instruction of CMA.
Tim Shoveller, Chief Executive Officer of Freightliner Group, adds: âThis transaction marks an exciting new chapter for Intermodal and Heavy Haul, allowing each to focus on their distinct markets under separate ownership.
"The Intermodal business will become a stand-alone business within CMA CGM’s portfolio, with opportunities to collaborate with other arm’s length CMA CGM companies.
"Heavy Haul will continue its growth journey in the bulk materials sector under a new brand with a clear focus on strengthening its position as a key freight operator. Our customers will continue to receive the same high-quality leadership and operational teams, and we have robust plans in place to ensure a smooth transition of ownership.”
The merger will see CMA CGM become a key player in the UK's rail logistics, creating better efficiency throughout its operations.
