Industry impacts

Breakthrough is a provider of innovative transportation technology and market insights, bringing new ideas to the US$700bn transportation industry. Through cutting-edge technology and industry expertise, the company has been delivering sustainable solutions since 2004. Through this, it has been helping to reduce cost, create strong and equal partnerships, as well as decarbonise transportation networks.

Every year, the company supports and processes more than 46.5 million shipments, as well as more than US$35bn in transportation spend. Across its various supplier relationships, it supports more than 16.5 billion commercial miles and more than 2.5 billion gallons of diesel fuel.

As part of its commitment to responsible operations, Breakthrough is expanding its fleet management capabilities. In 2022, it launched CleanMile, the first end-to-end transportation emissions management solution which allowed shippers to track, plan and execute initiatives focused on emissions reduction.

In February, Breakthrough published its 2026 State of Transportation Report, exploring how shippers and carriers have begun to view emissions reduction as a useful and practical tool to strengthen network resilience and mitigate disruption. Though ongoing volatility is reshaping transportation planning, 58% of shippers report having made progress to their sustainability goals over the past 12 months.

This also comes as 91% of transportation leaders feel confident that their organisations are prepared to navigate fuel disruptions, with an agility emerging throughout their operation.

โ€œAs tariff policies, energy markets and regulatory conditions continue to shift, many transportation leaders are navigating an environment where separating meaningful market signals from short-term noise has become more challenging,โ€ said Heather Mueller, Chief Client Strategy Officer at Breakthrough, at the time of publication.

โ€œWhat weโ€™re seeing in the data is that cost management and sustainability are becoming much more closely intertwined, with sustainability playing a growing role in how leaders manage cost exposure and how they build long-term resilience into their operations.โ€

Throughout the report, Breakthrough emphasises that transportation companies are showing a greater focus on resilience, working to ensure they can face ongoing volatility with sustainable improvements which can demonstrate operational benefits. Though ongoing uncertainty, rising costs and freight rate shifts are having an impact on operations, leaders are looking ahead for a wider perspective, prioritising intentional investment which will ensure long-term benefits, rather than reactionary short-term solutions.

The CleanMile drive

Following the report and its ongoing commitment to sustainable solutions across transportation, Breakthrough was named in the 75 Green Supply Chain Partners list by Inbound Logistics. This recognises how the company has been advancing sustainability across the sector, driven by its ongoing investments into CleanMile.

Breakthrough has been helping supply chain leaders decarbonise, without losses in efficiency or profit. Instead, the company has helped unlock efficiency gains and cost savings with its CleanMile solutions and more. Shippers have gained the tools to reduce their emissions alongside a transportation strategy โ€“ not instead of.

"We are honored to be recognised by Inbound Logistics as a Green Supply Chain Partner," says John Teggart, President of Breakthrough.

"This reflects the progress our clients are making to reduce emissions, optimise their networks and control cost. This recognition motivates us to continue moving forward and reinforces our commitment to help shippers turn sustainability into a competitive advantage."

Ongoing enhancements to CleanMile has meant that it can strengthen its capabilities and help clients reach greater potential. With its scenario planner implementation, shippers can forecast emissions, gain insights into the operational and financial impact of reduction strategies and adjust roadmaps to meet new demands. Complex data can be translated into clean executive-ready reports that meet both internal and external sustainability requirements.

Through this, Breakthrough has been delivering on sustainable fuel and freight solutions to improve global network efficiency. It has demonstrated the ability to decarbonise transportation and reduce costs for shippers.
