Bombardier’s $72m Dorval hub adopts a 'campus' model, leveraging USMCA trade to build a resilient trilateral supply chain and boost aerospace productivity

Bombardier, the aviation and aerospace component manufacturer, is investing US$72m in a new 11,706 m² manufacturing centre in Dorval, Canada, with the facility part-funded by a US$25m repayable loan from Investissement Québec's ESSOR programme.

The centre will complement Bombardier's existing facilities with the goal of further increasing production capacity and productivity, with opening scheduled before the end of 2027.

According to Bombardier, the state-of-the-art centre marks a "significant milestone" in its growth strategy. Located near the Challenger manufacturing centre and the Laurent Beaudoin Completion Centre, it will expand Bombardier's industrial footprint and strengthen its production capabilities.

The strategic positioning demonstrates what industry analysts describe as a "campus" approach to aerospace manufacturing – a model that creates closed-loop logistics systems by co-locating manufacturing and final completion operations within the same hub.

Trilateral supply chain model

The Dorval investment appears to reflect broader industry movement away from sprawling global supply chains toward what could be characterised as a Trilateral Supply Chain model. This approach leverages the specific manufacturing strengths of Canada, the United States and Mexico under the regulatory stability of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) trade agreement.

David Murray, Executive Vice President of Manufacturing, IT and Bombardier Operational Excellence System, says: "This major investment demonstrates our commitment to support Bombardier's growth and build the infrastructure we need to maximise our productivity.

"As we expand our manufacturing capacity, we're positioning ourselves to keep up with global demand and solidify our position at the top of the business aviation industry.

"The ESSOR programme, which will finance part of our expansion through a repayable loan, supports Bombardier's global growth objectives while creating quality jobs in the province of Quebec."

Infrastructure for next-generation materials

The expanded infrastructure could position Bombardier to manage the transition from traditional aerospace materials to advanced thermoplastics and sustainable composites.

As the company develops future aircraft such as the Ecojet, direct oversight of Environmental Product Declarations and supplier vetting on carbon transparency could become increasingly critical to manufacturing strategy.

To support the strategic initiative, Quebec's Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, Christine Fréchette, was in attendance to announce the loan.

"By supporting the expansion of Bombardier," explains Christine "a world-class prime contractor, our government is generating significant economic benefits for the entire Quebec supply chain and for the aerospace cluster."

"This investment will also lead to the creation of hundreds of highly skilled, well-paid jobs, while strengthening Quebec's expertise."

Economic impact and cluster dynamics

A PwC study commissioned by Bombardier found that it contributed a total of US$5.3bn to Canada's GDP in 2024 and sustained nearly 50,000 jobs across the country.

In Quebec, Bombardier creates 10,000 direct jobs and is a direct source for more than 31% of aerospace employment. As a prime contractor, the company's growth could stabilise hundreds of local specialised suppliers, potentially ensuring the Montreal cluster remains among the world's top three aerospace hubs.

"Thanks to its know-how and its capacity for innovation," Christine adds "Bombardier is helping to consolidate Quebec's global position in this strategic sector and I am very proud to support this homegrown company."
