The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi, has announced the operational launch of the vaccine distribution hub in the region, now that the first shipments have arrived.
The hub represents a milestone in the United Arab Emirate's steps in strengthening global health security.
It is also a move towards building more resilient supply chains across Abu Dhabi.
Building efficiency and reliability
The operational launch of the vaccine distribution hub marks the Emirate of Abu Dhabi's move to innovate and strengthen the region.
The Department of Health - Abu Dhabi (DoH) is the regulator of healthcare throughout the region and it is eager to see the area go from strength to strength.
Developed with the help of local and global stakeholders, the hub is a clear development of the region's goal to ensure reliable and fair vaccine access to all.
H.E Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, says: “The operational launch of Abu Dhabi’s regional vaccine hub signals our readiness to serve the region with speed, precision, and reliability.
"More than a logistics milestone, this reflects our long-term vision to position Abu Dhabi as a trusted partner in global health where innovation and resilience translate into timely access and measurable public health impact.
"Through this hub, we are making vaccines more accessible to communities across borders and strengthening the UAE’s leadership in preventive, future-ready healthcare.”
The hub will improve vaccine access across the region, providing efficient healthcare to every citizen.
More than 20 vaccines will be managed within the facility, providing immunisations across paediatric and adult populations.
Collaboration and supply chains
The hub could not exist without collaboration between a range of the region's leaders.
It is operated by Rafed, a subsidiary of PureHealth, and was developed by the DoH, Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO), GSK, AS Ports Group, Etihad Cargo and KEZAD Group.
Boyd Chongphaisal, Vice President and General Manager, GSK Gulf, comments: “The launch of our vaccine distribution hub in Abu Dhabi represents a shared commitment to health security, innovation, and access.
"Through our strategic partnership with DoH and local stakeholders, we are combining scientific excellence with operational strength to ensure timely, efficient delivery of vaccines across the region."
This mass collaboration sees a major investment into the UAE's expanding life sciences ecosystem, but also into the people.
Through improving vaccine access across the region, the hub ends harmful barriers to healthcare, thus improving the lives of everyone within Abu Dhabi.
The hub is strategically placed within an area of advanced cold-chain logistics infrastructure and in an area which actively encourages innovation.
Abi Dhabi is, through this new development, presenting its model of cross-sector collaboration, a method that unites sectors to build efficiency, strength and productivity.
The hub alone unites government, biopharma, logistics and innovation.
Visibility and traceability
Through the implementation of smart distribution technologies, Rafed is preserving vaccine integrity and ensuring there is end-to-end visibility throughout the logistics process.
Mohammad Mustafa Saeed, Chief Executive Officer of Rafed adds: "The launch of this regional vaccine distribution hub is a tangible expression of our strategy to strengthen health systems, improve access, and build resilience across borders.
"By deploying advanced cold-chain and smart distribution technologies, we are enabling real-time, end-to-end visibility."
More than 100 international destinations are connected to Abu Dhabi through Etihad Cargo's PharmaLife network.
This allows for time-sensitive, temperature-controlled freight services which are tailored for pharmaceutical products.
Stanislas Brun, Chief Cargo Officer at Etihad Airways says: “Etihad Cargo’s participation in this initiative reflects our continued investment in healthcare logistics.
"We are proud to support Abu Dhabi’s vision of becoming a global leader in life sciences and supply chain excellence.”
Millions of vaccines will be distributed by the facility every year, thanks to the help of each contributor.
Delivery times will also be shortened significantly and vaccine supply will be considered much more reliable.
Through these partnerships and the logistics within the hub, UAE's value chain sees new levels of strength and trust, proving the facilitiy to be a proactive and resilient healthcare model.
