New research has shown that the freight and fleet industry has been hesitant to adopt low emission vehicles because of a lack of information about their capabilities and benefits.

Transport for London’s LoCITY initiative interviewed 28 commercial fleet operators, vehicle manufacturers and infrastructure providers to gauge their experiences of low emission vehicles.

Findings showed that a lack of information about sustainable alternatives — as well as clean fuels and infrastructure — has prevented corporate uptake of eco-friendly vehicles.

Former Mayor of London Boris Johnson launched LoCITY in January of this year. The programme works with freight and fleet companies operating in London to encourage the use of low-emission lorries with the aim of improving air quality in the city.

Mike Brown, Transport Commissioner for London, said:  "The freight sector is by its nature dynamic, so it's key that anything we do in London is aligned to initiatives across the UK — LoCITY takes this approach.

"The scheme will allow operators of commercial vehicles to make informed decisions with a useable, independent and jargon-free source of information on alternative fuels and vehicles."
