In what represents a landmark moment for global logistics, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has unveiled a US$270m consolidated cargo handling centre at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK) – the first new air freight facility at the airport in 25 years.

Developed in collaboration with logistics infrastructure firm Realterm and air cargo handler Worldwide Flight Services (WFS), the centre brings operations from four separate cargo zones together to ease congestion, speed up processes and free up space for future expansion.

The new facility spans 350,000 square feet over 26 acres and replaces two older terminals. It marks the first phase in a larger redevelopment programme to modernise JFK’s north cargo area and support growing freight volumes in the long term.

JFK plays a key role in international cargo flows, handling everything from high-value goods such as electronics and pharmaceuticals to perishables. The airport processed 1.67 million tonnes of freight in 2024, which is 5% up on 2023 and 25% more than in 2019, making it the eighth-busiest cargo airport in the US and 21st globally.

JFK is also the busiest US entry point for low-value international e-commerce packages, managing about one-quarter of incoming items in that category.

Bringing modern efficiency to air cargo

At the heart of JFK's new cargo handling centre is a suite of operational enhancements aimed at minimising delays and streamlining truck activity. These include a truck dock management system using real-time scheduling, automated check-in and digital messaging between drivers and loading dock operators.

The technology matches vehicles with suitable docks based on the size, type and contents of each delivery, helping to reduce the time drivers spend idling or queueing outside the facility and ensures that trucks only arrive when a dock is ready. The result is lower emissions, less traffic around the airport and quicker turnaround for cargo shipments.

The new building is also equipped to handle temperature-sensitive freight. It features 3,000 square feet of cooler space, with sections that maintain controlled environments of 2-8C and 15-25C. These are the first on-airport areas at JFK specifically designed for items such as pharmaceuticals and fresh goods.

“We are in the midst of historic overhauls across all of our airports and this new cargo centre is yet more proof of the transformation that is under way,” explains Kevin O’Toole, Chairman of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

"This new consolidated cargo centre reduces truck congestion, lowers emissions and creates good-paying jobs, all while supporting the industries that power the region and the nation.”

Backing future growth with sustainable design

As well as improving logistics flows, the new facility supports wider sustainability goals.

In line with the Port Authority’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, the cargo hub uses electric forklifts and offers charging points for electric vehicles.

It also features an automated unit load device system that boosts energy efficiency by managing power usage more effectively throughout the cargo process.

These measures are designed not only to reduce the environmental impact of current operations but also to set a benchmark for future facilities across the industry.

Rick Cotton, Executive Director of The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey

“By replacing outdated facilities with a modern cargo center, we’re preparing for the future and improving efficiency and sustainability at JFK,” continues Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority.

“JFK plays a central role in global commerce and this modern, consolidated cargo centre strengthens its position as a key gateway for high-value goods and international trade.”

Boosting local communities and job creation

Beyond freight-handling and sustainability goals, the project also brings economic benefits to local communities.

For example, the construction phase exceeded diversity targets, with more than 42% of contracts awarded to minority and women-owned business enterprises.

The site is expected to create 100 permanent roles, with the Port Authority working with the Council for Airport Opportunity and other organisations to prioritise local hiring through job fairs and outreach efforts.

David Rose, Managing Director of Realterm, comments: “This modern and one-of-a-kind facility exemplifies what can be achieved through strong public-private partnerships and demonstrates Realterm’s commitment to creating infrastructure that meets the evolving needs of the air cargo industry while supporting local economic development.”

WFS, which operates the centre and has worked out of JFK for more than four decades, says the new facility represents a step change in its logistics capabilities.

“This cutting-edge facility reflects our commitment to innovation, sustainability and operational excellence in our drive to serve customers better," adds Mike Simpson, CEO of Gateway Services for the Americas at WFS.

"This development sets new standards for efficiency and safety and is a showpiece not just for JFK’s aviation ecosystem, but to the air cargo industry worldwide. The facility embodies our dedication to connecting the world through logistics and embraces new levels of digitalisation and sustainability that will act as a model for other new cargo operations around the world.”
