Jens Lund, CEO at DSV, says the organisation will become a "world-leading player in global transport and logistics" following its purchase of DB Schenker

DSV has officially completed its acquisition of DB Schenker in a US$15.3bn deal, creating one of the world's largest transport and logistics companies.

The purchase gives DSV full control of DB Schenker, with previous owner Deutsche Bahn retaining all proceeds to reduce its debt and sharpen its focus on rail infrastructure and operations.

Deutsche Bahn's sale of DB Schenker follows a competitive and through process launched in December 2023. Germany's national rail operator selected DSV as the buyer after determining it had submitted the most financially-advantageous offer.

A purchase contract was signed between the two parties in September 2024.

"With the completion of the acquisition of Schenker, we have reached a milestone in the history of DSV," comments Jens Lund, CEO at DSV. "We have been looking forward to completing the transaction and I am excited to welcome our new colleagues to the DSV organisation.

"With this acquisition, we become a world-leading player in global transport and logistics, at a time when global supply chains are more in focus than ever before and our customers need a reliable and agile global network of services and products."

New eras for DSV and DB Schenker

Having obtained final approval from competition regulators in both the European Union and the US, the Danish powerhouse is set to move forward with integration plans.

DSV intends to invest around $1.07bn in Germany over the next three to five years – funding which is expected to support expansion efforts and consolidate the two businesses into a single, flexible logistics platform.

For DB Schenker, the change in ownership closes one chapter and opens another. With a heritage dating back more than 150 years, the logistics business has been part of Deutsche Bahn for almost two decades.

Under DSV’s ownership, DB Schenker will work towards establishing what its leadership believes could become the largest logistics organisation globally.

"Today marks the close of what has been the most successful era to date in Schenker's more-than-150-year history," says Jochen Thewes, CEO at DB Schenker.

"It is with great pride that we look back on our excellent performance over the past years with Deutsche Bahn as our owner. Now, with DSV, we have the opportunity to build the world's largest logistics group. We look forward to working together on this great vision through responsible and collaborative partnership."

Deutsche Bahn switches focus

The sale of DB Schenker forms part of Deutsche Bahn’s strategy to simplify its business structure and reinforce its core operations.

The rail specialist plans to use the proceeds from the Schenker transaction to substantially cut its debt load and invest in turning around rail performance and infrastructure reliability over the next three years.

Dr Richard Lutz, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO at Deutsche Bahn, said the sale represented the largest corporate deal in the group’s history.

"The sale of Schenker will reduce complexity for DB and allow us to fully focus on our core business," adds Richard. "Over the next three years, we will turn our infrastructure, rail operations and profitability around.

"The acquisition by DSV will give DB Schenker a new owner that promises a unique market position and opportunities for international growth."
