DHL Freight opens a 5,200 sqm terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde, enhancing European logistics with sustainable tech, 48 loading docks and improved transport

DHL Freight has officially opened its new terminal in Berlin-Marienfelde, marking a significant step in enhancing both logistics capacity and sustainability.

The state-of-the-art facility, spanning 5,200 square metres and equipped with 48 loading docks, replaces the older Berlin site which had reached its operational limits.

Strategically located near the city centre, the terminal is designed to streamline last-mile distribution while strengthening DHL Freight’s extensive European network.

The Berlin-Marienfelde terminal reflects DHL Freight’s commitment to efficient, modern logistics. With subsidiaries in more than 40 countries, DHL Freight operates a vast international network, offering businesses a single point of contact within their local markets.

The new terminal is part of DHL Freight’s broader growth strategy, enhancing services not just in Berlin but across Europe.

Handling more than 45 million tonnes of freight annually, DHL Freight has the capacity to adapt to fluctuating transport demands, whether during peak seasons or quieter periods.

The terminal’s 48 loading docks allow for faster, more flexible handling of Less Than Truckload (LTL) and Full Truckload (FTL) shipments. This optimised infrastructure reduces waiting times and increases efficiency for goods moving across the region.

The terminal’s strategic location in south Berlin ensures optimal transport connections. Situated on Buckower Chaussee, it provides easy access to key motorways, facilitating smoother distribution routes and improving last-mile delivery times.

Sustainability at the core of operations

More than just a logistics hub, the Berlin-Marienfelde terminal showcases DHL Freight’s dedication to sustainability.

Built with DHL’s environmental goals in mind, the facility incorporates a range of eco-friendly technologies aimed at reducing carbon emissions and conserving resources.

Dr Thomas Vogel, CEO of DHL Freight DACH, UK & IE, highlights the dual focus on capacity expansion and sustainability: "The new city terminal in Berlin not only expands our capacities but also reflects our commitment to more sustainable logistics.

"In addition to various alternative drive technologies such as electric trucks, at the site itself we have placed importance on measures such as photovoltaics, wind turbines and the latest in water management."

The terminal features an integrated photovoltaic system, generating renewable energy to support operations.

Wind turbines also contribute to the site’s power needs, reducing reliance on conventional energy sources. A heat pump system maintains temperature control efficiently, while rainwater harvesting helps manage water consumption sustainably.

EV infrastructure is another key feature, with charging stations powered by renewable energy are available for both trucks and cars, supporting DHL’s transition to a greener fleet.

The vehicle line-up includes electric forklifts, natural gas-powered trucks and battery electric vehicles for last-mile deliveries, all contributing to lower emissions across the logistics chain.

A milestone in DHL Freight’s growth

The Marienfelde terminal is a pillar of DHL Freight’s European network strategy. By improving transport efficiency and integrating sustainable practices, the terminal enhances DHL’s ability to meet current logistics demands while preparing for future challenges.

Goetz Hanningsmann, Area Manager North DHL Freight, emphasises the strategic importance of the new terminal: "With modern technologies and optimised processes, we can contribute to making the transport of goods in the region not only more efficient but also more sustainable.

"This creates double value for our customers and our environment."

The terminal was developed in collaboration with Operatio GmbH and Bremer Berlin-Brandenburg GmbH. Construction began in November 2023 and within just 14 months, the site transformed from a former industrial area into a modern logistics hub.

Covering 20,000 square metres, the facility complements DHL Freight’s other regional site in Wustermark, creating a robust logistics network across the Berlin-Brandenburg area.

By blending strategic location, cutting-edge technology and a strong focus on sustainability, DHL Freight’s Berlin-Marienfelde terminal sets new standards for modern logistics operations in Europe.
