Life in the fast lane – An Operating model gear change

Sharing insights from his extensive career in aerospace, consulting and automotive, Ashley Naughton, Senior Director of Intelligent Supply Chain and Procurement at Capgemini Invent stresses the importance of supply chain transformation.

Self-reflection

Highlighting the complexities of modern supply chains and the need for businesses to invest in understanding themselves, Naughton reflects on the common challenges, finding your purpose, operating models, and the critical themes of resilience and sustainability.

"Every business needs to invest in and understand itself because these things will differ for each business,” says Naughton.

Naughton encourages the audience to adopt a self-reflection approach to assess whether your current operating model aligns with the strategies of the organisation.

Resilience in the supply chain

Due to the cyclical nature of resiliency, Naughton contemplates the continuous need for such practices in an ever-changing business landscape.

“Resiliency is actually a continuum. It's not something that happens once every 10 to 20 years,” says Naughton.

Naughton outlines five key characteristics that supply chains must embody:

  1. Resilience
  2. Sustainability
  3. Integration into the global supply chain
  4. Agility
  5. Efficiency

"Businesses need to be aware that resiliency is a daily drumbeat of operation. This is the new norm,” says Naughton.

A unified approach

Introducing the concept that supply chain and procurement challenges are similar, and advocating for a unified approach, Naughton emphasises the importance of understanding data ecosystems, mapping business requirements, and finding technology partners aligned with specific use cases.

Naughton concludes his keynote by discussing the importance of a step-by-step approach, focusing on self-awareness, defining goals, remaining technology agnostic until needs are clear, and ensuring the alignment of operating models with the business strategy.
