Coupa Inspire 2025: Interview with Bill Wardwell, Coupa

Coupa Inspire 2025 saw technologists, procurement practitioners, supply chain leaders and finance executives gather at the ARIA Resort in Las Vegas.
During a fascinating conversation with Supply Chain Digital, Bill Wardwell, General Manager and SVP of Payments, Treasury and Supplier Services at Coupa, shared insights into how the company is revolutionising business spend management through innovative technology and an expanding network of suppliers.
Navigating uncertainty with technology
Against a backdrop of global trade disruptions and conflict, Bill emphasised Coupa's critical role in helping businesses remain agile.
"You can't predict disruption," he noted, "but what you can do is be set up and work with a partner like Coupa who can help you react quickly."
According to Bill, Coupa's vast network and data capabilities provide organisations with the information they need at their fingertips, enabling them to manage disruptions more effectively while preparing for unforeseen challenges ahead.
"It's all about how you react and react quickly," he continues. "The tech we provide at Coupa makes customers both faster and better."
This focus on adaptability has positioned Coupa as a trusted partner for businesses seeking to transform their approach to spend management and supplier interactions in an increasingly complex global landscape.
Agentic AI takes centre stage
Coupa Inspire 2025 placed strong emphasis on agentic AI, which featured prominently in Salvatore Lombardo's (Chief Product and Technology Officer) contribution to the opening session.
Bill described it as "fundamentally important" to Coupa's strategy, acknowledging that it will "change the way our customers and their teams work with products and networks like Coupa" across numerous applications.
At the forefront of this innovation is Navi, Coupa's native AI agent built directly into the platform. Bill explained that Navi helps customers "interact with the software more easily" while automating tasks and improving information access within the platform.
The integration of this technology represents a significant advancement in how businesses can manage their operations, leaving customers excited to incorporate such capabilities into their processes.
Powering the future of trade
With approximately 20 years of experience in banking, fintech and software, Bill brings valuable perspective to his role supporting teams across the customer lifecycle—from sales and implementation to customer success and supplier engagement.
Coupa Inspire 2025 showcased Coupa's achievements in helping customers accelerate their businesses, with particular focus on their roadmap for AI, autonomous networks and what Bill described as "building the network that builds the future of trade".
This vision extends beyond mere software provision. As Bill explained, Coupa aims to help customers "manage their spend on a global basis" while transforming how their teams work and enhancing supplier interactions.
The enthusiasm for this approach was evident throughout the event, with strong engagement from both customers and Coupa's partner ecosystem, which Bill identified as "critical to Coupa, to delivering our products and services to customers".
As businesses continue to navigate shifting global conditions, Coupa's tech-driven approach and commitment to building robust networks appear well-positioned to support organisations through both current challenges and those that lie ahead.
