JLR: Progressing Sustainable Luxury in Leather Supply Chains
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) has aligned itself with the Leather Working Group (LWG) to bolster its commitment to luxury materials with a traceable and sustainable supply chain.
Recognising the challenges associated with leather, the move reflects JLR’s pledge to adopt practices that minimise environmental and ethical concerns.
Leather is often regarded as a hallmark of luxury, but its production is linked to significant environmental and social issues.
Among the most pressing concerns is cattle ranching, a leading driver of deforestation, particularly in the Amazon. Reports indicate that up to 80% of Amazon deforestation stems from cattle ranching.
The environmental impact doesn’t stop at deforestation. The livestock industry is a major emitter of greenhouse gases, including methane and nitrous oxide, which contribute to climate change. Furthermore, forced labour and encroachment on indigenous territories have been reported in some parts of the leather industry.
Transparency is another issue. Many leather supply chains lack clarity, leaving consumers unaware of the origins or environmental footprint of their purchases.
However, leather has the potential to be biodegradable, offering a smaller environmental impact compared to synthetic alternatives like plastics.
The Leather Working Group’s role
Founded in 2005, the Leather Working Group is a coalition of stakeholders from the leather industry, including brands, manufacturers and environmental organisations.
Its goal is to promote sustainability and responsible practices in leather production. Over time, the organisation has grown to represent more than 2,000 stakeholders across 60 countries.

The LWG collaborates with prominent groups such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Textile Exchange on initiatives like the Deforestation Free Call to Action for Leather.
JLR’s membership in the LWG signals its commitment to the group’s mission.
Andrea Debbane, JLR’s Chief Sustainability Officer, adds: “Through becoming a member of the Leather Working Group, JLR can help promote the highest standards in leather production and sustainable development, in line with our Reimagine strategy, which aims to set new benchmarks in environmental societal and community impact for a luxury business.
“This means committing to transparency, social responsibility and environmental stewardship and ensuring full traceability in all our material sourcing, including leather.”
Vanessa Podmore, Executive Director of the LWG, emphasises the importance of partnerships: “Collaboration is at the heart of our organisation.
"Over 19 years ago, one of our first collaboration partners was the World Wildlife Fund and that continues to this day, including the work we do with both them and Textile Exchange on the Deforestation Free Call to Action for Leather.”
Transforming supply chains
For JLR, the use of leather extends beyond vehicle interiors. Both Jaguar and Land Rover offer lifestyle collections that include leather goods such as wallets, jackets and briefcases. This highlights the need for a robust supply chain that meets sustainability goals.
In 2021, JLR launched a blockchain-based trial to ensure full traceability within its leather supply chain. Partnering with Circulor, Bridge of Weir Leather Company and the University of Nottingham, the project aimed to create a digital record of leather’s journey from raw material to finished product.
Dave Owen, previously Executive Director of Supply Chain at JLR, explained the significance of the trial: “We are currently restructuring our supply chain as part of Reimagine, with a focus on transparency and sustainability.
"The outcome from this world‑first trial will allow us to further improve the sustainability of the leather supply chain around the globe, ensuring the complete traceability of raw materials from origin to vehicle.”
JLR’s decision to join the LWG strengthens its broader Reimagine strategy, a blueprint for setting new sustainability benchmarks in the luxury automotive sector. By integrating LWG standards into its operations, JLR reaffirms its dedication to ethical sourcing, environmental stewardship and transparency across its supply chain.
As the company continues to innovate, it remains clear that sustainability and luxury are no longer mutually exclusive. JLR’s involvement with the LWG signals a significant step towards a more responsible and traceable leather industry.
