Scott Dance, UK&I Procurement Engagement Director at Hays, talks procurement recruitment strategies at Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE 2023

As the world’s fastest-growing procurement and supply chain event, Procurement & Supply Chain LIVE 2023 was a disruptive learning and networking event that showcased some of the industry’s top speakers across innovation, thought leadership and strategy.

Scott Dance, UK&I Procurement Engagement Director at Hays

Scott Dance is UK&I Procurement Engagement Director at recruitment specialist Hays, and is an expert in talent retention.

In his keynote, Dance addressed the recruitment challenges faced by procurement professionals, caused by the ‘Great Resignation’, and a tendency to follow "traditional recruitment methods rather than diversifying the talent pool".

Dance also highlighted how staff retention in procurement is being harmed by the gap between what employees want, and what companies are offering.  "Career development plans are lacking and employees feel stuck," Dance said.

Procurement and the talent gap

He added: "Organisations should make job descriptions more diverse, avoid biased language, and consider factors such as hybrid working, company culture, and make them project-based. Salary is important but it shouldn’t be the sole focus for organisations looking to attract talent.

"We're seeing people go from the private sector to the public sector and taking pay cuts, because they want to give back to the community.".

Dance concluded his keynote by suggesting companies should re-evaluate the "employee value proposition" and consider a "more diverse and inclusive approach".
