Redefining Global Trade with FlavorCloud CEO

In the third episode of the Supply Chain Podcast, Aaron McMillan, Senior Editor of Procurement Magazine and Supply Chain Digital, sits down with Rathna Sharad, the CEO and founder of FlavorCloud. As a visionary leader with decades of experience at the intersection of logistics and technology, Sharad shares her journey from building the foundational infrastructure of global trade to launching an AI driven platform that simplifies cross-border shipping. The conversation delves into the necessity of seamless international commerce and how technology can bridge the gap between brands and global consumers.

A Legacy of Solving Complex Puzzles

Sharad’s expertise is rooted in a deep understanding of the physical and digital backbones of the industry. Before founding FlavorCloud, she spent over six years at Microsoft as a founding member of the Bing Ads team, focusing on product strategy and monetization. Earlier in her career, she worked on the ground at UPS and Menlo Worldwide, where she integrated RFID scanning and optimized transcontinental freight routes. This unique blend of experience in both high-tech product leadership and "boots on the ground" logistics provided her with the insights needed to tackle the labyrinth of international customs.

Solving the Friction in Cross-Border Shipping

FlavorCloud was born out of a realization that while the world was becoming more connected, the infrastructure for international e-commerce remained fractured. Sharad describes the "stark disparity" between the seamless nature of digital ads and the horrendous experience of international shipping for consumers. She observed that many brands, regardless of size, struggled with the complexity of shipping to over 200 countries. By automating the backend—including customs, compliance, and route optimization—her platform allows brands to go live internationally in as little as 30 minutes.

Leveraging AI Native Technology for Scale

The logistics industry is traditionally viewed as "old school" and a laggard in technology adoption. Sharad explains that FlavorCloud addresses this by being an AI native tech stack. The platform manages complex tasks such as Harmonized System (HS) code classification and acting as the importer of record. By utilizing deep learning and machine learning, the company provides a "one stop shop" that removes the manual nature of global trade. This innovation proved critical during the pandemic, when the global supply chain buckled and FlavorCloud became a lifeline for international commerce.

Leadership through Volatility and Growth

Managing a startup in the volatile world of global logistics requires an even-keeled approach. Sharad notes that the highs and lows of leadership can occur within the same day, making perspective vital for success. She encourages emerging leaders to be bold and "be naive" enough to take the leap into entrepreneurship. Furthermore, she highlights that the current era of social commerce has made international traffic a significant portion of a brand's volume—often 40% to 60%—requiring leaders to be more agile than ever before.

The Future of a Unified Global Marketplace

Looking ahead, Sharad envisions a world where the concept of "international shipping" as a separate, difficult entity begins to disappear. As infrastructure and data layers catch up to consumer expectations, the world is moving toward a unified marketplace. She predicts that manual paperwork will soon be obsolete, replaced by automated, audit-ready systems. For those entering the field, her advice is clear: use AI as a workforce multiplier to stay ahead of shifting trade winds and regulatory changes.
