Supply Chain Transformation – our development from tactical to strategic - a journey including culture, ownership and concepts

Alexander Tschentscher, Head of Supply Chain Excellence and Head of Strategy, Supply Chain and Logistics at Siemens kickstarts his keynote with a reference to Mary Poppins:

“I want to start with Mary Poppins, because I think she is a change manager, a spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down. Let me tell you how we at Siemens try to facilitate a transformation from a very tactical driven organisation to a more strategic approach.”

Strategy implementations

Highlighting that 90% of strategies fail, Tschentscher stresses the need for a different approach and reflects on his role in supply chain excellence at Siemens.

"Failure is not an option for us. So we ask ourselves, what can we do? What can make the difference?,” says Tschentscher.

Outlining Siemens' smart infrastructure, Tschentscher shares the company's vision for a next-generation and robust supply chain with smart decisions, customer care, and environmental responsibility.

"We believe in a next-generation, robust supply chain with smart decisions in a dynamic world, caring for the customer and our environment with dedicated services,” he adds.

The challenges of a tactical-driven supply chain

Reflecting on traditional supply chains, describing them as tactical and reactive, Tschentscher uses the example of airfreight challenges during COVID-19 stressing the need to move from a resilient to a robust supply chain.

Introducing the concept of a strategic diamond as a tool for long-term success, Tschentscher breaks this down into trends and triggers, focus areas, strategic activities, and strategic fields.

"Strategic diamond is a conceptual base that allows us to identify, integrate, and if necessary, adapt to changes that are happening in the market,” says Tschentscher.

Elsewhere, Tschentscher also touches on sustainability opportunities, ecosystems, and cultural change.
