PepsiCo and XPO: Leading the UK’s Shift to Electric Freight

PepsiCo joins forces with XPO Logistics to push forward a shared goal: decarbonising UK transport routes with over one million kilometres of electric-powered freight.
In a deal covering PepsiCo’s main UK distribution hubs in Leicester, Lutterworth, Coventry and Warrington, XPO steps in as the food and beverage giant’s core transport partner across England and Wales.
PepsiCo, behind global names like Pepsi MAX, Doritos, 7UP Zero Sugar and Quaker Oats, also makes British staples such as Walkers, Wotsits, Monster Munch and Pipers.
Every day, millions across the UK eat or drink something made by PepsiCo - but the product has to be transported through the supply chain first, before it reaches consumers more than one billion times a day.
At the core of this logistics shift is XPO Logistics’ ability to deliver scalable transport solutions. With 206 sites in 14 countries, 20,000 trucks and trailers, and 1,000,000 square metres of warehouse space, XPO operates across Europe with its headquarters in Lyon, France.
The wider XPO group, listed on the New York Stock Exchange, handles less-than-truckload freight across North America, moving more than eight million tonnes annually for about 55,000 customers across 606 sites.
Electric trucks hit the road
XPO's new role isn’t just about hauling crisps from point A to point B — it’s about shifting freight operations into a lower-emissions era.
Central to this is the rollout of electric vehicles across PepsiCo's UK logistics network. Mercedes-Benz eActros trucks, powered by batteries instead of diesel, will be moving more than one million kilometres of PepsiCo products each year.
This is expected to cut more than 1,200 tonnes of CO₂ annually from its logistics footprint.
The tech doesn’t stop at the trucks. XPO is equipping the rollout with a proprietary CO₂ Reporting Dashboard. The platform uses AI, scenario modelling and live data to help plan and track carbon reductions in real-time.
That means PepsiCo can monitor emissions closely, tweak operations on the go, and make sure their freight network runs more efficiently — all while sticking to environmental goals.
Dan Myers, Managing Director for the UK and Ireland at XPO Logistics, says the move is about more than cutting emissions: “Sustainability is in our DNA. We are proud to partner with PepsiCo on this journey, combining investment in electric mobility with advanced technology and operational excellence.
"Our shared ambition goes beyond compliance — it’s about transformation. I believe this is just the beginning of what we can achieve together.”
Shared ambition, shared trucks, shared goals
This partnership is part of PepsiCo’s wider “PepsiCo Positive” (pep+) agenda — a strategy that runs through everything from farming and product development to how goods reach customers.
Launched in 2021, the pep+ programme is built around sustainability and human capital, aiming to deliver business value while staying within environmental boundaries. Working with XPO ticks those boxes by cutting carbon while ensuring product delivery remains reliable.
Andrew Smethurst, UK Logistics Director at PepsiCo, explains why XPO was chosen: “XPO Logistics has shown itself to be the ideal partner to help advance our PepsiCo Positive ambition.
"From their industry-leading sustainability credentials to a strong safety culture and transparent operational model, their team has consistently delivered innovation and value.
"This new partnership will play a vital role in further reducing our logistics emissions as we move iconic products like Walkers crisps and Doritos to our customers across the UK.”
Meanwhile, Daimler Truck UK is supplying the trucks.
Heiko Selzam, Managing Director, says the deal shows strong confidence in the eActros 600: “We are very proud to strengthen our partnership further with XPO Logistics with this order of our award-winning eActros 600s for the PepsiCo partnership.
"This commitment underscores the recognition of both companies of the critical role these vehicles will play in achieving their sustainability goals. Following extensive collaboration, this order firmly establishes the eActros 600 as a leading solution in the electric truck market.
"We are looking forward to seeing these trucks operational from 1 August.”
With technology, transparency and trucks aligned, both companies are making real progress toward emissions targets while keeping favourite snacks moving across the country.
