How Instant Checkout Fuels ChatGPT’s E-Commerce Push

OpenAI is weaving e-commerce into the heart of ChatGPT with the introduction of Instant Checkout, a new feature that lets users complete purchases directly inside the chat interface.
It has begun offering access to shops on Etsy and Shopify, before opening up to more than one million merchants using Shopify’s platform.
The feature rolled out first in the US and will become available across all ChatGPT tiers – Plus, Pro and free.
With AI moving closer to the point of sale, the shift in user behaviour could be just as important as the technology behind it.
One tap from search to sale
Instant Checkout changes how e-commerce works within AI chat.
Users can now ask for gift ideas or search for specific items like “best running shoes under US$100” or “gifts for a ceramics lover.” In return, ChatGPT surfaces product listings, ranked only by relevance.
OpenAI confirms: “ChatGPT simply acts as the user’s AI agent – securely passing information between user and merchant, just like a digital personal shopper would.”
If a product supports Instant Checkout, a “buy” button appears. Users confirm order details directly in the chat and complete the purchase without opening a new browser window or logging in elsewhere. All order handling, payments and delivery remain the responsibility of the original seller.
OpenAI states: "Orders, payments and fulfillment are handled by the merchant using their existing systems.”
At launch, the system includes a range of brands preparing to come online, including Glossier, SKIMS and Vuori. All of them aim to take advantage of AI-assisted discovery and in-chat checkout.
With 700 million weekly users already turning to ChatGPT for tasks like browsing products, Instant Checkout builds a direct bridge between intent and purchase.
OpenAI insists that product visibility is not influenced by whether an item supports Instant Checkout, adding that listings remain “organic and unsponsored, ranked purely on relevance to the user".
Stripe powers the protocol
To underpin Instant Checkout, OpenAI partners with Stripe to build a system that works behind the scenes while keeping the user experience seamless.
The result is the Agentic Commerce Protocol, an open-source framework designed to help AI systems complete commercial transactions while allowing sellers to retain control over their customer experience.
This protocol defines how agents like ChatGPT pass orders to merchants, using APIs (application programming interfaces) and payment tokens. It supports a wide range of payment processors and business models.
If a merchant already uses Stripe, integrating Instant Checkout takes just one line of code. For others, options exist through Stripe’s Shared Payment Token API or by adopting the Delegated Payments Spec, also included in the protocol.
Stripe’s President of Technology and Business Will Gaybrick explains: “Stripe is building the economic infrastructure for AI. That means re-architecting today’s commerce systems and creating new AI-powered experiences for billions of people.”
The protocol gives merchants the ability to accept or reject orders, process transactions through their existing payment provider and manage delivery using their current infrastructure. It ensures no double work or separate platform is needed.
Customers also remain in control. Every step of the purchase requires user confirmation.
Payment tokens are encrypted, authorised for specific amounts to specific merchants, and can’t be reused. Only the data needed to complete the transaction is shared.
Expansion plans and merchant tools
Right now, Instant Checkout supports the purchase of individual items.
OpenAI says it plans to introduce features such as a shopping cart for buying multiple products at once. It also aims to expand merchant participation beyond the initial Shopify and Etsy integration and broaden availability outside the US.
For ecommerce sellers, the opportunity to meet customers inside ChatGPT is now more accessible. OpenAI has already published technical documentation and opened up applications for merchants interested in integrating their products.
Merchants pay a fee for completed purchases, but for users the service comes with no additional cost. Product pricing remains unchanged.
Will sees this integration as a natural step: “Stripe is proud to power Instant Checkout in ChatGPT and co-develop the Agentic Commerce Protocol to help businesses and AI platforms build the future of commerce.”
With Instant Checkout, ChatGPT begins to resemble a personal shopping assistant – one that answers questions, finds items and completes the transaction in one place.
