Developing new supply chains

Amazon’s investment in the UK creates a diverse, nationwide supply chain, opening up greater opportunities around the UK and helping more communities.

As part of the development, new fulfilment centres will open in Hull and Northampton, creating 2,000 jobs each.

As well as two new buildings at Amazon’s corporate HQ in East London, there will be new sites in the East Midlands and delivery stations nationwide.

The new investments also see the creation of 60 different roles at these new sites, diversifying new job opportunities to include the introduction of robot technicians, safety experts and mechatronic engineers.

Amazon also hopes to enhance transportation infrastructure, allowing for faster and more efficient product distribution for all customers and consumers.

Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, comments: “Amazon’s £40 billion investment adds another major win to Britain’s basket and is a massive vote of confidence in the UK as the best place to do business.

“It means thousands of new jobs—real opportunities for people in every corner of the country to build careers, learn new skills and support their families.

The investment is expected to contribute an additional £38bn (US$52.1bn) towards the UK’s GDP.

Previous UK endeavours

Amazon has been investing in the UK for the past 27 years, and between 2015 and 2024, the company invested more than £75bn (US$102.88) into its UK operations.

There has already been significant investment in Amazon UK’s R&D programmes including.

Earlier this year, Amazon announced Darlington as its first location for UK drone deliveries. This will enable faster and more efficient last-mile delivery by drones carrying out 30-minute deliveries from the warehouse to customers’ homes.

Amazon CEO, Andy Jassy says: "We now employ over 75,000 people and have become one of the UK's largest private sector employers and taxpayers.

“When Amazon invests, it’s not only in London and the South East – we’re bringing innovation and job creation to communities throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, strengthening the UK’s economy and delivering better experiences for customers wherever they live.”

As well as full-time job opportunities, Amazon is creating 1,000 apprenticeships in the UK this year across 40 different programmes, from data science to marketing.

The company also offers a range of pioneering training programmes and AI education, helping its employees stay up to date with developing technology.

This ground-level investment encourages employees from any department to further develop their skills, thus significantly growing the supply chain.

An ethical value

As well as economic investment in the UK, Amazon has introduced sustainable and ethical measures to its operations.

In 2021, former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Amazon co-founded The Multibank Initiative in Fife. This initiative provides families in need with surplus products donated by Amazon.

In March, a sixth site was launched in the West Midlands, thanks to Amazon’s commitment to the cause.

More than 140 new electric HGVs joined Amazon’s UK transportation network this year, ensuring Amazon continues to cut down on exhaust and GHG emissions.

Amazon’s investment in the UK has helped thousands of people across the nation, and is sure to continuously offer more opportunities to a range of communities.
