HelloFresh is meeting consumer demands, tackling bottleneck concerns and compressing content creation timelines by implementing AI across its operations

Global meal kit provider HelloFresh has deployed an AI-powered system to address a major production bottleneck in its supply chain, specifically within its recipe card creation process.

HelloFresh, which operates across 18 countries, delivers millions of meals quarterly and was facing constraints that delayed its ability to bring new dishes to market quickly across its global operation.

The new technology compresses the production timeline for recipe cards from several months to a matter of hours.

AI optimisation and supply chain efficiency

The implementation of generative AI targets a content production bottleneck that had wide-ranging effects on HelloFresh's value chain. By automating the layout and visual design elements of recipe cards, HelloFresh has decoupled the pace of recipe development from its production capacity. This allows its culinary teams to focus on creating dishes rather than managing complex design workflows.

The change addresses the constraints of the previous manual process that limited menu diversity and slowed reactions to market signals. With compressed production timelines HelloFresh can respond faster to emerging food trends, seasonal ingredient availability and customer feedback across its different geographies. HelloFresh can now adjust menus based on regional preferences or trending ingredients without the multi-week lead times required under its former design process.

This automation of layout and design tasks allows HelloFresh to be more agile. Previously extended editing and design cycles meant new recipes could wait weeks or months before reaching customers. This lag limited the company's ability to react to changing food trends or adjust menus based on ingredient availability - a critical factor in the food supply chain.

The production issue became more acute as HelloFresh scaled, now operating in markets from the USA and UK to Australia and Japan.

Integrating technology across operations

This AI-enhanced system is one component of a broader technology strategy at HelloFresh targeting operational efficiency and waste reduction. According to a report by Bloomberg, HelloFresh has made a US$70m investment in AI-driven menu expansion which would more than double its weekly meal offerings in the United States.

This investment is also reported to include AI-driven robotics in distribution centres to speed up order packing indicating a wider deployment of technology across the HelloFresh supply chain.

“After years of serving millions of customers around the world, HelloFresh has built the world’s largest recipe database, paired with a wealth of proprietary insights into what people love to cook and eat,” says Assaf Ronen, Group President at HelloFresh.

This large dataset provides the foundation for its technology-driven approach to optimising its product offerings. The technology is currently operating for customers in the United States with an expansion planned for additional markets including the UK.

Balancing automation with creative control

HelloFresh has structured its technology deployment to maintain human oversight in creative development while automating production workflows. HelloFresh chefs continue to create new dishes, test ingredient pairings and refine cooking techniques without AI involvement in these core creative decisions. Food stylists also remain responsible for dish presentation and ensuring visual accuracy on the recipe cards.

This operational model allows HelloFresh to increase its recipe output without a proportional rise in design and production staff as the business expands. By automating layout and formatting, HelloFresh can increase the volume of new recipes its culinary teams develop.

“This depth of culinary data is a key differentiator that allows our technology to bring together creativity, personalisation and speed in a way that elevates the home experience for every customer” Assaf explains. This approach allows HelloFresh to scale its supply chain output efficiently while maintaining quality control.
