How EXP Embeds Sustainability in Engineering Supply Chains
The built environment is responsible for 26% of global energy-related emissions, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), driving businesses to prioritise reducing their environmental impact through strategic design and engineering.
As organisations across sectors face mounting pressure to decarbonise their operations, the supply chain for sustainable building materials and practices has become increasingly critical to achieving environmental targets.
EXP, a civil engineering company delivering engineering, architecture, design and consulting services, operates with more than 4,700 professionals across North America.
The firm works on providing solutions through its projects that help build sustainable and resilient infrastructure to improve communities, with sustainability considerations embedded throughout its supply chain decisions.
Supply chain sustainability in practice
EXP aims to promote sustainable practices throughout its operations, for its clients, in the workplace and in its communities.
Its targets are formed from the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including a focus on sustainable building and environmental action.
The company is following the SDGs of achieving the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources and substantially reducing waste generation through prevention, reduction, recycling and reuse.
These commitments have direct implications for how EXP procures materials and partners with suppliers.
Between 2020 and 2023, EXP saved 2,353 trees from reduced printing, as well as sourcing paper and wood products certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
This demonstrates a strategic approach to supply chain management, prioritising suppliers who meet recognised environmental standards.
The firm has also prioritised the sustainable design and use of recycled content in its offices, including using carpet and flooring with high percentages of recycled material.
These procurement decisions reflect a broader shift towards circular economy principles within the construction supply chain.
Ivan Dvorak, Chairman and CEO at EXP, says: "Sustainability is woven into the fabric of who we are.
"It functions as an ongoing conversation, part of our value system and decision making process, as well as a catalyst for continuous improvement.
"With each year, we have the opportunity to assess what the world needs to address the most pressing challenges and reflect on our associated achievements that help shape a better future."
