A substantial portion of the global carbon footprint stems from food systems, with estimates ranging between 21% and 37%.

Bunge, a prominent global agribusiness and food company, plays a significant role in these systems – but is laser-focused on mitigating its ecological impact, including throughout its supply chain.

Robert Coviello, Chief Sustainability Officer and Government Affairs at Bunge, remarks: “At Bunge, our continued commitment to advancing sustainable agriculture is critical as the world manages uncertainty in global markets and increasingly unpredictable climate challenges.

“That’s why, through Bunge’s ongoing investments in low-carbon solutions, responsible supply chains and social impact programmes, we remain focused on driving real, scalable impact to support a more sustainable food system.”

Bunge’s sustainability efforts

Bunge's Global Sustainability Report for 2025 reveals it has successfully reduced its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 19.7% and its Scope 3 emissions by 6.7%, all measured against a 2020 baseline, underscoring the company's dedication to sustainable supply chain operations.

Additionally, Bunge has accomplished 100% traceability in monitoring soybean sources from priority Brazilian regions affected by deforestation and Land Use Change (LUC). The milestone is crucial as agribusinesses face challenges in tracking supply chains across vulnerable ecosystems.

In Europe, Bunge has taken the step of eliminating coal usage within its facilities, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.

The company has also extended its regenerative agriculture initiatives to Canada and Poland, promoting sustainable farming practices globally.

Collaborative innovation

Beyond immediate company actions, Bunge is striving to establish new agriculture sustainability standards.

It partners with the World Resources Institute to develop a multi-stakeholder initiative, introducing a free public tool for coherent LUC emissions reporting aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

"Collaborating with a global agribusiness company like Bunge, with the scale and scope of its operations, was instrumental in informing our work,” notes Caroline Winchester, Head of Responsible Supply Chains at the World Resources Institute, in the report.

“Their experience and insights were invaluable, helping to ensure that our methodology for calculating land use change emissions is applicable in the real-world context. This standardised tool, along with other resources, will enable businesses to advance toward their sustainability goals in the same way that Bunge has.”

Commitment to regenerative practices

Bunge's efforts focus on non-deforestation initiatives, including global sourcing of palm oil and crops like soy, grains and oilseeds in South America. The company remains committed to achieving traceable, sustainable palm oil production.

As part of its endeavour, Bunge aims to eliminate commodity-driven deforestation through collaboration with stakeholders.

Furthermore, the organisation expanded its regenerative agriculture programme in 2024, scaling up its initiatives in the US, Brazil and Hungary.

In Brazil, Bunge doubled engagement among farmers in its programme and expanded its pilot project area to 245,000 hectares. Similarly, it involved 121,405 hectares of canola cultivation in Canada and 24,000 hectares with additional facilities in the Eastern Corn Belt of the US.

Environmental goals

In 2021, Bunge set near-term science-based targets, aiming to curtail Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by 25% and reduce Scope 3 emissions by 12.3% by 2030, based on a 2020 baseline.

Endorsed by the SBTi, Bunge is on its way to achieving these objectives.

The firm's environmental accomplishments extend beyond carbon footprint reductions. By 2024, Bunge had exceeded its 10% reduction goals in waste and water use by 2026. Notably, 82% of its total waste was reused or recycled, while waste-to-landfill intensity dropped by 13.5%. In addition, Bunge recorded a 17.2% reduction in water intensity.
