How Honeywell Propels METRO Greece's Logistics Efficiency

METRO Greece stands as one of the country's leading supermarket companies, employing around 11,000 people nationwide.
Now, the retail leader has transformed how it manages logistics across its national store and distribution centre network through the adoption of Honeywell’s mobility and voice technologies.
Working with Honeywell, as well as systems integrator Mobile Technology, METRO is automating key warehouse and store processes using a suite of integrated devices.
As operator of 50 wholesale Cash & Carry outlets and almost 250 My market retail stores across Greece, the upgrade represents a large-scale implementation aimed at enhancing efficiency without disrupting day-to-day operations.
Embarking on a digital transformation
Founded in 1976, METRO is a 100% Greek and family-owned business.
In addition to Cash & Carry wholesale stores and the My market retail chain, the company opened its first Best Value store in Cyprus in 2020.
Throughout its history, METRO has maintained a focus on customer respect, consistent product quality, safe working environments, sustainability and community contribution. In recent years, it has undertaken a bold digital transformation, investing in innovation to strengthen competitiveness, improve customer experience, optimise operations and support business growth.
This extends to METRO's logistics set-up, which must be resilient, integrated and adaptable to cope with thousands of daily orders and round-the-clock operations. Ultimately, the goal is to improve order accuracy, increase processing speed and raise productivity – all while maintaining smooth service.
The organisation identified that achieving these objectives means equipping teams with technology that is easy to adopt, withstands the demands of warehouse work and supports accurate, fast-paced fulfilment.
A tailored technology package
Mobile Technology, a long-standing Honeywell partner, deployed a mix of devices and software to support METRO’s requirements.
The rollout included:
- Voice 700x headset and software – enabling voice-directed workflows for hands-free operation, reducing fatigue
- Voice-enabled picking (Voice 706) – guiding tasks verbally, reducing errors and improving accuracy
- CK65 mobile computer – designed for durability and long battery life
- ScanPal EDA52 handheld computer – supporting scanning and data entry tasks
- RT-10 tablet – providing mobile access to operational systems
Overall, the deployment spanned more than 2,000 devices across stores and at least 500 in distribution centres. The technology’s rugged build and extended battery life make it suitable for intensive warehouse use, while ergonomic design and an intuitive user interface help staff adapt quickly, reducing downtime during adoption.
Integration into METRO’s existing warehouse management system allows for immediate operational benefits without lengthy transition periods.
Oscar Ganuza, VP and General Manager for Productivity Solutions and Services (PSS) across Europe, LATAM, APAC and META at Honeywell, explains: "Honeywell’s advanced automation and mobility technologies have delivered a solution for METRO that streamlines operational performance, showcases the real-world impact of intelligent warehouse innovation, and results in smarter and more efficient logistics for the retail sector."
Delivering measurable supply chain improvements
Following implementation, METRO has reported clear improvements in performance. Picking errors have been reduced, supply chain reliability has increased and the pace of operations accelerated.
Meanwhile, employees report higher satisfaction levels, as the technology helps streamline workflows and minimises repetitive manual processes.
Communication between warehouse teams has also become more efficient, while operations continue uninterrupted even during peak periods. Installation, training and ongoing support from Honeywell ensure the technology remains effective in everyday use.
"Thanks to the integration of Honeywell technology, our productivity has skyrocketed," adds Evangelia Dimitrokalli, IT Supply Chain Manager at METRO. "The voice, automation and mobility solutions have enabled us to achieve new standards in efficiency and accuracy across our entire logistics chain."
