Why FedEx is Expanding its Logistics Capabilities in Spain

FedEx is increasing its logistics capabilities in Spain with the launch of a brand-new facility.
The expanded infrastructure stands to unlock regional growth and enable FedEx to meet consumer demand more efficiently.
The logistics giant is also positioning itself at the forefront of innovation through its strategic footing.
Logistics expansion
FedEx stands as one of the world's biggest logistics companies and is a trusted partner for businesses and consumers around the world.
Its new facility in Bilbao includes 2,700 square metres of warehouse space β almost 2,000 square metres larger than the previous site β and an extra 400 square metres of office space, meaning warehouse and administrative staff are all in one place.
The sorting process has been enhanced, with capacity to handle up to 1,500 packages per hour, thus reducing wait times for consumers. Parcels can be processed faster and shipped immediately, preventing backlogs.
With 27 loading docks, up from 20, the new site is better equipped to streamline shipment processing. FedEx is now able to meet growing consumer demand for logistics and e-commerce, supporting customer needs.
A strategic location
Bilbao is the financial capital of the Basque Country, an autonomous community in northern Spain. It has a major business ecosystem with its own strong industrial base.
The area has been ranked as the leading innovation hub in Southern Europe by the EU, as it has a flourishing Science, Technology and Innovation Network. At state level, it is the leading region for innovation.
By creating its state-of-the-art facility in here, FedEx is strategically placing itself at the heart of innovation and showcasing itself as a reliable logistics partner for this ecosystem.
As a city, Bilbao is constantly striving to remain globally competitive with new projects. With expanded hub, it becomes even better connected than before, with faster processing that could encourage more projects and innovation.
Ian Silverton, Managing Director of Ground Operations for FedEx Spain and Portugal, says: "This new complex represents a significant investment in our operational capabilities and allows us to enhance our service offerings for customers, supporting their international aspirations and operational needs.
βWith the Bilbao station, we considerably increase our operational footprint and improve efficiency, while also enabling us to handle greater volumes.β
Combining FedEx's logistics knowledge and Bilbao's innovation and infrastructure, the new facility boasts excellent capabilities.
With existing stations in San Sebastian and Vitoria, alongside Vitoria's air gateway with next-day connectivity to Europe and America, the Basque Country is now exceptionally well-connected. These combined facilities have a sorting capacity of up to 6,000 packages per hour.
Further investment in the region ensures a remarkably high level of service efficiency β both for FedEx and local businesses.
