Bentley Motors Sets New Responsible Sourcing Standards
Bentley Motors is transforming its supply chain operations with the publication of its Raw Material Sourcing Policy Statement, implementing stringent ethical standards across procurement, animal welfare and sustainable forest management as part of the Beyond100+ strategy.
The luxury carmaker is successfully merging its heritage of extreme craftsmanship with a modern mandate for supply chain responsibility. The marque's updated Policy Statement establishes a rigorous framework for materials handled at its Crewe headquarters, ensuring that every hide, fibre and veneer meets exacting environmental and social standards before entering its production network.
By aligning with the Volkswagen Group Responsible Raw Material Policy, Bentley applies a risk-based due diligence approach that prioritises transparency and continuous improvement across its intricate global supply chain. This alignment enables the manufacturer to leverage enterprise-level procurement intelligence while maintaining its distinct standards for luxury materials.
The policy serves as a formal reinforcement of Bentley's commitment to international human rights and environmental frameworks. It acknowledges the inherent difficulty of managing multi-tier supply chains while mandating a culture of accountability throughout every procurement touchpoint.
Rather than settling for surface-level checks, the brand utilises a robust monitoring system to ensure that every partner in their network adheres to the same high ethical bar set by the manufacturer itself. This approach could represent a significant shift in how luxury automotive supply chains operate, moving beyond compliance towards proactive risk management.
Embedding transparency in procurement
At the heart of this transition is a significantly strengthened focus on supply chain transparency for animal-derived materials. Bentley now requires all leather hides utilised in its vehicles to comply strictly with European Union (EU) or equivalent national legislation.
This compliance is not merely self-reported; it is backed by third-party verification and recognised certification schemes embedded within procurement contracts. By clearly defining prohibited practices, Bentley ensures that its suppliers are held to a standard of ongoing reporting that leaves no room for ambiguity regarding sourcing conditions.
This level of supply chain visibility could prove challenging for suppliers accustomed to less rigorous oversight, requiring investment in traceability systems and documentation processes throughout the procurement cycle.
Managing timber supply chain risk
The brand is also redefining luxury through the lens of sustainable supply chain management for timber products. Every wood veneer featured in a Bentley cabin must now satisfy the requirements of the UK Timber Regulations and the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR).
Beyond simply sourcing from responsibly managed forests, the marque is investing in the future of material circularity within its supply base. This involves exploring recycled and reconstituted wood alternatives that deliver the brand's signature aesthetic and quality without the environmental impact associated with traditional harvesting methods.
Marine Godot, Head of Sustainability and Materials, Bentley Motors, says: "True luxury today is defined not only by exceptional craftsmanship and performance, but by the values that sit behind every material choice.
"Our Responsible Raw Material Sourcing Policy reflects Bentley's long-term commitment to responsible sourcing, animal welfare and sustainable supply chains, ensuring our products continue to embody responsible luxury for generations to come."
Supplier collaboration and accountability
Underpinning these commitments is a culture of leadership, accountability and collaboration throughout the supply network. Bentley works closely with suppliers to embed responsible sourcing standards throughout its value chain, supported by regular risk assessments, training programmes and transparent reporting mechanisms.
This collaborative approach could prove essential for maintaining supply chain resilience while implementing more stringent material standards. The manufacturer recognises that transforming procurement practices requires ongoing dialogue with suppliers rather than a unilateral mandate.
Dr Frank-Steffen Walliser, Chairman and CEO of Bentley Motors, adds: "Responsible luxury demands continual progress. This Policy Statement is a living document – one that will continue to evolve as legislation, industry expectations and our own understanding advance.
"By regularly reviewing and strengthening our approach to responsible raw material sourcing, we are ensuring that the highest standards of animal welfare, environmental stewardship and ethical sourcing remain firmly embedded at the heart of Bentley, today and for the future."
The Beyond100+ strategy places sustainability at the core of the brand, redefining every aspect of supply chain operations to lead in sustainable luxury mobility. It secures Bentley's long-term commitment to low carbon, responsible luxury, combining care for the environment with supporting people and innovation throughout its procurement network.
