Screwfix has deepened its commitment to sustainability by adopting electric heavy goods vehicles, aligning with eco-friendly logistics practices.

As the demand for sustainability becomes more pronounced among stakeholders and consumers, companies are adopting more eco-friendly practices.

Among those making notable strides is Screwfix, the leading hardware retailer in the UK, which is now incorporating electric heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) into its logistics fleet.

Embracing EVs

In a bold move aimed at bolstering both productivity and sustainability, Screwfix has begun integrating electric HGVs into its logistics operations.

The vehicles, the first of their kind in the Screwfix fleet, have an impressive range of around 200 miles per charge, although this varies depending on weather conditions, driving style and road type.

Remarkably, these electric HGVs can be deployed twice within a 24-hour timeframe, ensuring efficient use of resources.

This initiative plays a significant part in the company’s broader environmental strategy aimed at achieving net zero emissions for Scope 1 and Scope 2 by 2040.

Emma Ross, the Director of Logistics Operations at Screwfix, champions the venture: "At Screwfix, we are committed to driving positive change and leading the way in sustainable logistics.

"The addition of electric HGVs to our fleet is a testament to our dedication to reducing our environmental impact, while still delivering the exceptional service our customers expect."

Further enhancing Screwfix's eco-friendly approach, the EVs join a fleet that already includes vehicles fuelled by hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).

"The addition of these electric vehicles to our existing HVO-fuelled fleet is another step towards a cleaner, more sustainable future," adds Emma.

Comprehensive sustainability efforts

Under its 'Let’s Fix Tomorrow, Today' strategy, Screwfix has embarked on an ambitious plan towards sustainability.

Since 2021, the company has managed to cut its direct carbon emissions from Scope 1 and 2 sources by 50%. It has replaced traditional fossil fuel heating methods with air source heat pumps across over 639 stores and transitioned 85% of its delivery fleet to HVO fuel.

In collaboration with the Woodland Trust, Screwfix is investing in projects to bolster UK resilience against climate change and improve biodiversity.

Additionally, the company achieved a significant recycling milestone by converting 81% of its waste into new materials between 2022 and 2023; the other 19% was incinerated, with the heat being recycled to generate electricity.

Complementing these green logistics initiatives, Screwfix has also set up charging stations at its Lichfield Distribution Centre (DC). This not only support the new electric vehicles but also source power from renewable energy, including the DC's extensive array of solar panels.

These installations highlight Screwfix's comprehensive approach to minimising its dependency on fossil fuels and reducing CO2 emissions.

Strategic impact

The incorporation of electric HGVs into the Screwfix fleet exemplifies the company's strategic focus on purchasing and sustainability.

The company's procurement team is carefully evaluating suppliers based on sustainability and technical specifications ensuring compliance with the company's long-term environmental goals.

As part of this strategy, strategic sourcing is crucial to developing a renewable energy infrastructure compatible with meeting net-zero objectives.

Such forward-thinking initiatives promise enhanced operational performance and long-term cost efficiencies while propelling Screwfix toward its net-zero ambitions. With these projects, Screwfix is not only leading by example in responsible sourcing but also significantly advancing the shift towards green logistics.

Matt Compton, Screwfix Commercial Director

“Our colleagues tell us that working for a responsible retailer is really important to them and we have achieved some phenomenal milestones that we’re really proud of," concludes Matt Compton, Commercial Director at Screwfix.

“We know there is much more to do and we’re committed to going even further to reduce our impact on the environment and make it even easier for our customers to shop more sustainably.”
