Nikola is on a mission to transform commercial transportation with cutting-edge zero-emissions solutions

Securing a HYLA hydrogen refuelling station in West Sacramento, California, marks another step in its bid to revolutionise the sector.

With a strong focus on reducing environmental impact, Nikola combines advanced vehicle technology with a growing hydrogen ecosystem to redefine sustainability in the freight industry.

Driving sustainability with Class 8 zero-emission trucks

Central to Nikola’s vision are its Class 8 trucks, which include both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). These vehicles are engineered to meet the specific needs of the freight sector, providing a balance between sustainability and operational efficiency.

Among Nikola’s flagship models is the Nikola One, a hydrogen-powered sleeper cab designed for long-haul transport. It features a 250 kWh battery, delivers up to 1,000 horsepower, and offers a range of 500-750 miles. This impressive range, combined with its zero-emission design, positions it as a game-changer in long-distance logistics.

Another notable innovation is the Nikola Tre BEV, a semi-truck with a total battery capacity of 738 kWh, delivering up to 330 miles per charge. Its advanced features include:

  • Regenerative braking to improve energy efficiency
  • Independent suspension for smoother operations
  • Aerodynamic design to enhance performance and reduce energy consumption

For operations requiring greater range and rapid refuelling, Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell trucks stand out. These vehicles can travel up to 500 miles on a single tank, with a refuelling time of approximately 20 minutes, making them ideal for diverse applications such as drayage, intermodal, and regional trucking.

HYLA: The backbone of Nikola’s hydrogen ecosystem

Through its HYLA brand, Nikola is creating a comprehensive hydrogen ecosystem to support its fuel cell vehicles.

This approach covers every aspect of the hydrogen supply chain:

  1. Hydrogen production: Ensuring a consistent and reliable fuel supply.
  2. Distribution: Streamlining the transportation of hydrogen to refuelling stations.
  3. Refuelling infrastructure: Offering both modular and permanent stations to meet varied operational demands.

This integrated ecosystem provides fleet operators with scalable and adaptable refuelling options, making it easier to adopt hydrogen-powered solutions.

The West Sacramento refuelling station exemplifies this commitment, supporting both local and regional fleets while bolstering infrastructure for zero-emission vehicles.

Ole Hoefelmann, President of Energy at Nikola

“We're thrilled to open our first HYLA hydrogen refuelling station in Northern California," comments Ole Hoefelmann, President of Energy at Nikola. "West Sacramento marks a significant milestone for Nikola and offers convenient access for our fleet customers based in West Sacramento and its surrounding areas.

"Reaching a zero-emission future just became one step closer as we continue our planned rollout to strengthen the north-south I-5 freight corridor and expand coverage areas from the Port of Oakland.”

Innovation and collaboration at the core

Nikola operates from its headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, with manufacturing facilities in Coolidge, Arizona. These sites enable the company to combine cutting-edge R&D with efficient production processes, ensuring vehicles meet the rigorous demands of modern logistics.

The company’s dedication stretches beyond truck manufacturing. Nikola actively collaborates with industry partners, government bodies and environmental organisations to advance the transition to zero-emission transportation. This includes advocacy for supportive policies and fostering partnerships that drive innovation across the sector.

By pushing the boundaries of vehicle technology and establishing a robust hydrogen network, Nikola continues to set new standards for sustainable freight operations.

Its integrated approach promises not only to transform logistics but also to inspire broader change across the transportation industry.
