A paper from logistics giant DHL identifies trends, changes, and solutions in life sciences and healthcare supply chains

Rapid change in the life sciences and healthcare sector is reshaping pharma logistics, a study from DHL suggests.

The paper, Delivering Next-Level Healthcare, identifies six trends that are remoulding the sector:

  • Patient-centric healthcare
  • Advanced therapies
  • Digital technologies
  • New industry ecosystems
  • Sustainable solutions; and
  • Resilience

The DHL paper explores transformation through the lens of key industry trends, including: the development of patient-centric healthcare models; the continued growth of biopharma and advanced therapies; digital technologies shaping the delivery of healthcare; new ecosystems forming across the industry; the imperative of sustainability; and how events of recent years are demanding a renewed focus on resilience.

These trends, it says, “are driving the next generation of healthcare services and treatments”, and adds that they are “also placing new demands on the logistics operations that enable their delivery”.

These include: Expanded cold-chain capabilities, catering for temperatures down to -196°C, and “new supply chain archetypes”.

New healthcare trends reshaping supply chains

The paper examines the emerging responses to recent challenges in the sector. These include persistent shortages of drugs and medical products, the reassessment of the way healthcare systems plan and prepare for future epidemics and pandemics, and increased pressure on the financial models that underpin regional, national and international health systems.

DHL Customer Solutions & Innovation President of Life Sciences and Healthcare Claudia Roa says: "Revolutionary therapies reflect the accelerating pace of medical progress and set the stage for a transformative shift in life sciences and healthcare delivery with patient-centric models, digital technologies, and environmentally conscious practices.

“This drives the emergence of new business ecosystems. The future holds a paradigm shift as next-level healthcare necessitates the creation of next-level healthcare supply chains.

“We believe that the coming years will see a transformation in this space, as next level healthcare drives the creation of next level healthcare supply chains.”
